what is the best bet?
at 17 I know insurance is going to be high and I'd really like something based around DT (I imagine realistically I couldn't afford an NSR or RS that would last me any length of time with that sort of money).

so I'm asking in earnest, what should I do?
(I'd really like to avoid CGs and similar)

You'll struggle, but it could be done. I assume you mean a DT and insurance for £1000? Finding a DT for sub £700 will be a challenge, and do not expect a good one. Then insurance will vary depending on your area and what experience you have, but it might be had for under £200.

I'd wait a bit or get a CG. The CG you'd get for £800 will be massively better than the DT you'll get for £800.

I got a mint new style CG125 with 3,000 miles on a Y plate for £900.

They're a scream to ride, biking isn't just about speed and looks Smile

I got myself a CRM125 (NSR engine in a trail style chassis) for £350. Needed a few bits, but should be a fair bit under £500 all in.

Older DTs can often be got for not too much.

Also consider the older sports style bikes, for instance NS125, TZ125 etc.

grr what I'd really like is an NS 125r/f . they look beautiful. Wish there were more around.

How do engine rebuilds actually work? Does old bike with rebuilt engine = more reliable? top end is just cleaning type things yes?

I'm starting to think I'm going to have to go old (and unreliable?)
or slow and ugly.

harumph!

hi,

I just spent that amount which got me a TW125 and a years insurance. Bike was 845 for an 2000 plate and insurance was £129, although I am 32 Wink

Decent bike - pretty slow but quite torqey being a 4 stroke and physically a bit bigger than a CG, which suits me at 6ft 2. Its looks are a matter or opinion - best described as charachterful lol - it aint going to win any beauty contests but theres something about the ridiculously wide back tyre that appeals to me.

Best thing is the garage has stated on the invoice that they will give me the exact same amount for it in p/ex if I trade up within 6 months, so cant go wrong really.

Just get a cg, a £750 on of them would prob only cost about £225 third party. If you are going for a cheap bike you need to get some thing more reliable

My NSR125 and NS125 were both more reliable than my CG125.

Generally CGs are very reliable, maybe yours had just been poorly maintained by a previous owner or was just a bad bike.

Or my 2 strokes were well maintained, so didn't suffer reliablity problems? Smile
