I’m after some opinions from you guys, I’m at a cross roads it seems in my life and when I start thinking about the hundreds of consequences, it hurt my brain.

Since school ended 4 years ago I always wanted to be involved in engineering, I started off by utilising my computer skills to do 2D CAD, I quickly picked it up and began to take the initiative in what ever tasks I was given, it seemed like a really good field for my skills.

I left my first job with my newly acquired knowledge and now I am slowly building my way up in my new job eventually entering the world of 3D CAD for good.
I’m on a decent wage, getting close to 20K now, I have been told the way to do this is to take the engineering HNC, from what I gather this will take a minimum of two years.
This will provide me with the basics I guess, I know enough to get me by in engineering but unless you have something on paper, employers don’t believe you.
I was really up for this course at some point, but I seem to be flagging, the course starts in September.

It’s like my brain has switched off the motivation part, I can’t seem to get myself into gear and do it, I want to earn more money but I appear to be getting bored of my first choice of career.
If I leave this job for another one that is similar I won’t have any qualifications to show another employer, they will see me as a junior, so to speak, and put me on around 14K, which I doubt I’d be able to live on as I am paying out quite a bit for rent etc…..

So, do I consider a career change?
With my debt rising due to some hard luck with bikes I’m now being controlled by it every month.
I was offered a job at Suzuki in the parts ordering section as I get on really well with the guy’s in there, I imagine this would be a lower wage but with the prospect of earning more later……

How about bike sales then, do you earn enough to eat?

Surely you do, guys in there seems to have more than one bike a car and a house etc…..
Bike related job would be brilliant, perhaps the friendly atmosphere and surroundings would spur my brain back into “Must try harder mode” again.

Any advice welcome, cheers for reading..

Killa Thumbs Up

if you live in the merseyside area liverpool community college runs an onc and a hnc in building services engineering, i have both these qualifications as well as 2d cad quals.
the great thing about just doing cad is that you can pick up new things everyday and you can apply it to lots of jobs. The downside of just being a draughtsman is that you can only ever earn a certain amount no matter what your age or experience.
If you are interested in engineering, the field of building services is a good way to go, the money just gets better and better with your experience, people will go out of there way in the industry to help you gain experience. personally i am moving away from this field as i am interested in architecture and ive got a job working as an architects technician.
sorry if ive not been any help but if you want to speak to someone about a worthwhile career in engineering speak to

C.I.B.S.E who are the chartered institute for building services engineers
also bear in mind there is a shortage nationally of engineers because people want to go straight to uni and miss the work part out and they find it hard to get a job as a graduate engineer which pays them what they expect, coz you just get paid what someone starting in the industry would, no work experience = not as much money

Can't you just get do the course on a more part time basis.

ie knock down the hours you were planning to do and see how it go's for the first few months whilst keeping you old job.

Get into a bit of a speed habit.

You become UBER-motivated.

My mum asked me to trim back two hedges for her the other day, i ended up doing the entire garden, and even going round and asking the neighbours if i could cut down a hedge that had seriously overgrown and annoyed my mum.

Worth a try Thumbs Up

I get motivated like that cleaning up the flat, I guess the job doesn’t interest me.
I’m just worried because a career change that falls flat on its face isn’t so bad, it’s going back to what I left that will be the shitter.

My GF wants to start a course for nutrition, she has got really interested in the topic after finding out she is allergic to dairy, so this has spurred her to do something she really wants.
I think it's great, i just want her to do well, so taking on something new myself with so much to loose scares me.

My advice is to find something that you REALLY, REALLY want to do and then seeing what you need to do to achieve it. Just sit down and think about the things you like doing, is there any one task that you do and then look at your watch and think, 'damn, where did the last five hours go?' (no, wanking is not a career Laughing ). That is something you enjoy.

You're young enough to get away with this but you'll need to be motivated. If I had my time over, I would have done mechanical engineering instead of electrical engineering as it turns out that that is what I really enjoy.

Still, I earn a decent wage and one thing that is really motivating me is my three week old son, I need to give him the things he requires in life.

Cheers

Grim
