Hi everyone,

Due to popular demand and a lot of erroneous (off topic) posts, I am putting these up again for general (intelligent) discussion.

Enjoy !!

Seeing as some people doubt I can ride my bike, I thought I'd better post some video, but...the video I've captured is too large to post (2 gb AVI).

So...here are some stills I've captured from video and a brief description of the manoeuvre (corning, correct road position for observation & safety and overtaking).

Enjoy !!

Just caught up with these guys in some twisties.

https://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c117/hotdog451/CBR%20Video/PDVD_193.jpg

Interesting road position....

https://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c117/hotdog451/CBR%20Video/PDVD_194.jpg

Aha, a motorhome !! Will they pass it ? ( I had spotted the motorhome before they entered the corner and caught it up, because I had seen it joining the main road from a side turning on the left).

https://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c117/hotdog451/CBR%20Video/PDVD_195.jpg

They might be happy admiring the back of a motorhome, but I've got better things to do.

https://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c117/hotdog451/CBR%20Video/PDVD_196.jpg

I can now see enough to carry out the pass I'm considering (the camera is lower down and so can't see the next section of road)

https://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c117/hotdog451/CBR%20Video/PDVD_197.jpg

I am now in a position to pass the first bike.

https://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c117/hotdog451/CBR%20Video/PDVD_198.jpg

Passing the first bike.

https://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c117/hotdog451/CBR%20Video/PDVD_199.jpg

About to pass the second bike, as you can see his poor road position limits his view ahead and therefore his choices (unless you enjoy being in queues of traffic). I can see the vanishing point, can he ?

https://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c117/hotdog451/CBR%20Video/PDVD_200.jpg

Having passed the bikes, I can now position myself for the best view ahead.

https://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c117/hotdog451/CBR%20Video/PDVD_201.jpg

It's not possible to do anything at this point so I am preparing for the opportunity that I expect to occur as the road opens up.

https://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c117/hotdog451/CBR%20Video/PDVD_202.jpg

Here you can see the advantage gained by correct position. I moved back to the left slightly, crossing the white line and positioning myself so that I could see as far ahead as possible.
Compare the view ahead with the previous picture before I altered my road position.

https://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c117/hotdog451/CBR%20Video/PDVD_203.jpg

All clear ahead !!

https://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c117/hotdog451/CBR%20Video/PDVD_204.jpg

Still looks clear to me.

https://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c117/hotdog451/CBR%20Video/PDVD_205.jpg

The overtake completed.
Notice I can still see the end of the road and that I am crossing the white line a fair distance from the approaching motorist.

https://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c117/hotdog451/CBR%20Video/PDVD_206.jpg

RF Concepts Sony bulletcam, separate mic recorded on to an Archos AV4100.

The Archos can record continuously for over 5 hours, for short rides I use a cannon minidv camcorder (the results are far, far superior).

See some people should learn from this as thats how an overtake should be done Mr. Green

The amount of people that go to over take and dont have a proper road posistion and end up staying on the wrong side of the ride for ages is stupid Laughing

siggi - I'm up for genuine discussion with anyone who is interested.

Your opinion and extreme amounts of conjecture (now bordering on the fantasy world as they are so far removed from what actually happened) are of no interest to me, though, you are of course STILL entitled to them.

Thanks, McGee,

I didn't think it was that difficult to follow.

Just a point from your other thread Hotdog which you dont seem to want to post in anymore(maybe karma protection inforce?)

but

"To simplify (for your benefit) He couldn't pull out to overtake as his forward view was completely restricted by the vehicle in front of him. "

Is it written in stone then that other riders/car drivers cant pull out ?

How can you state your a safe rider when you also state that another biker cant do something? everybody knows that their is no golden rule that says because it looks like he cant doesn't mean he wont.

Nothing in life can be taken for granted not least of all other road users

Very good point and of course I'm happy to discuss any intelligent points further.

It sounds like we've been riding about the same length of time and have similar survival instincts.

What I meant by saying he couldn't was that I could see him clearly and he looked a but green that I had assumed a position that he could have been in.

What I meant (by implication) is that he was aware that he couldn't move out.

"everybody knows that their is no golden rule that says because it looks like he cant doesn't mean he wont"

Completely right.

I was aware that he had blocked his view with the camper and so was he.

I hope that clarifies it somewhat.

Good point, well thought out.

Cheers,

Hotdog.

You're absolutely shameless! Worse than that, you appear genuinely unable to realise when you have made a complete and utter ass of yourself! How many more people will it take to point out your little lesson is an abortion before you get a clue?

You assume another biker is going to do something safe, when any expert will tell you to always assume the other guy will do something dangerous, and you overtake into a blind curve!

And you have the affrontery to accuse ME of giving people a bad example??? Shocked

Keep digging grandad, I'm curious to see how deep you can get before you reach the water-table and drown. Laughing

Cheers Vin,

That was recorded to hd.

The footage recorded to minidv is much better.

The secret is to buy a very good bulletcam.

Nothing I can see wrong from a practical side but then I'm not an instructor.

Photo 2 the rider is drifting towards the white line while almost leaning over it. Having a car hit your head hurts.

People do tend to stick to close to the vehicle in front limiting their view ahead. Remember chaps bikes are light and accelerate fast, you don't have to be close to overtake.

People also forget you can cross a split white line as long as you cause no danger to other/oncoming traffic. Don't be scared to use the whole road, you don't get a discount for only using half of it.

Very good quality pictures.

Cheers SP,

I guess that photos can't tell the whole story and not everyone is going to accept my description of events.

To be honest, I'm actually shocked at how poor quality a lot of the video footage I've seen is.

Thumbs Up

What do you use? I've got a nice reasonably small Sony camcorder sat doing nothing - if I could get a cheap but decent mount for it, I might take some footage for my own interest.

The best piece of kit I have is - RF concepts 480 TVL Bulletcam with a low light level Sony CCD. This bolts onto a custom stainless QR bracket.

For recording I use an archos AV4100 hd based recorder or a Cannon MiniDV recorder.

I've also recorded onto a pocket size goodmans recorder that uses memory cards.

I also have the good old tank mount with an analogue camcorder attached and also a very interesting headstock mounting camera mount that any camera bolts onto and is very stable.

I've experimented a lot

Next I'm getting the ATC 1000 to use on short blasts on my supermoto where quality isn't quite as important but size and low cost are....

So..lots of choices....

Still think you have a poor position on the right hander. The camera you said was mounted low on the bike to that would mean your even further into the other lane. This is putting yourself in more danger.

The one thing I would expect a biker who has no view following a camper to do is move to get a view not follow very close. This would involve backing off of moving left or right. I think because of this you were to close to the bikers when you made the overtake.
