Following Dragonfly's thread about skinny women, I got thinking...
It's funny that we automatically label Anorexia Nervosa as a woman's disease.
Now 20 odd years ago you could understand why, I believe the statistics were something along the lines of for every ten to fifteen women with it, there was one man.
But, as with all things, these days it's not so rare. It's nearer one man for every four women.
Is this something to do with men being embarrassed to admit to having what is generally considered a 'woman's' problem?

Binge eating, on the other hand is fairly even. Although research has shown that the feelings of guilt etc that come with the binge eting disorder are a lot more common in women, whereas men don't seem to feel as anxious about it.

Going back to Anorexia for men, I assume a lot of the same problems are triggers for the disease:
Having been teased as a child for being overweight.
Body dismorphia, not actually seeing the real image in the mirror.
Having a job that demands physical attractiveness and/or slimness.

Has anyone had any encounters with men struggling against this disease? Or even suffered with it themselves? (or know of a 'friend' that has?)

Despite what my intellect told me, my goal became to rid my body of all fat. I resumed exercising. I found I could walk good distances, despite some discomfort, if I iced my knees afterward. I started walking several times a day. I built a small pool in my basement and swam in place, tethered to the wall. I biked as much as I could tolerate. The denial of what I only much later came to recognize as anorexia involved overuse injuries as I sought medical help for tendonitis, muscle and joint pain, and entrapment neuropathies. I was never told that I was exercising too much, but I am sure that had I been told, I would not have listened.

Men, anorexia are you joking?

Seriously though the only time i've really seen men throw up is after they've been on a bender.

If i started to put on weight i would just start doing some running again and with that on top of my job which can be pretty physical should keep me in shape.

Back to anorexia, seriously though whos gonna pay 6 quid for a curry just to throw it up in 5 mins.

Most of my mates who have put on weight in their middle age just accept it, as a mate of mine says "i might only have a 6 inch dick but its 20 stone knocking it in" Laughing

According to my GP I am clinically underweight, and accoding to the BMI guide I am.

I am also extremely fit and helathy according to the doctor I see concerning my heart, I had an operation years ago, within the top 10-15% of the country apprently. Exercising on average around 10 hour's a week and eating reasonably healthily.

So people who are 'anorexic' may just actually be small build. And people who are 'obese' may just actually be of large build.
