Any vets or exoistic animals experts on here?

I just giving our 120y old felmale tortoise a pile of lettuce and tomatoes and notice while she was eating that her tounge was a dark red/black colour when its normaly light red like our tounges, could it be some form of infection?

The 50 years that my family have had its never had any health problems in the past only the odd damage on the edge of the shell Confused

Can,t get a pic of the tounge but here she is:

Eeeeek!

You've not just been feeding her lettuce and tomato? Crying or Very sad Tomato is okay occasionally. What type of Lettuce have you been feeding her?

Get yourself to www.shelledwarriors.co.uk

Lovely tortie tho, but not as pretty as my Lemon Laughing Wink

Do you know what species she is?

Just normal tecos iceberg lettuce, tomatos, cumbers, apples, stawberrys, as well as all the weeds and danylions in the garden she gets rid of. its whats shes been given her whole life so its can,t be any harm.

Not sure on the species, its been suggested in the past that shes turkish.

That could be a very poorly Tort....

Quote:
The occasional addition of lettuce and cucumber will not hurt if nothing else is available and can provide valuable moisture in dry weather, but these should never form the staple diet owing to their extremely low nutritional value. Fruit such as tomatoes, apple, plums, peaches and melon can be given as a treat but only occasionally as the sweet, wet conditions created by these foods often cause certain gut flora to 'bloom' resulting in gut irritation signaled by rather wet droppings often containing undigested food. This is both unpleasant and detrimental to your tortoise's health.

You really need to get her Identified - then you can provide the right diet.

Also, could you possibly get any pictures of her underneath. Thanks Smile

Tortoises can be funny things... one summer we gave some kiwi fruit to ours, and he wouldn't touch anything else up until he was put in hibernation next!
