In the practical test situation... you know when traffic lights are on red but you know they are gonna change soon, would it be acceptable to ride slowly until they change, rather than stopping and waiting.

Do you know what I mean? Dunno how to explain it?

I would say it depends on your approach, if you can go down through the gears smoothly and do a perfect slow speed control upto the lights then if they change before you actually stop ie green is showing then you would be perfectly legal to carry on your way but give a glance left or right just incase someone has jumped the lights Confused I did get a minor for a slight wobble when I did my lifesaver but if you don't wobble then you should be ok. Hope this helps Thumbs Up

I dont know if this applies to geared bikes, but on my CBT (tag 50) our instructor told us that bikes are for moving. We want to stop as little as possible and that if the light is red we should slow down so when we get to the line its green and we can keep going. It depends really on whether there is loads of traffic behind you I suppose.

Slow down, change down and get ready to move off and make progress Thumbs Up

By changing down through the gears, you will be either ready to pull away or knock it down one more and into 1st ready to pull away when green.

Its the same as approaching junctions and roundabouts, you get to the line, stop, and then move off. Instead you assess the potential of the situation.

Yes, it shows you're planning ahead and making smooth progress.

The examiner would rather see that than you having to stop, foot down, and into gear etc etc because you didn't anticipate the lights were about the change.

A mate who is a copper was told to do it for his police training. So its the right way to do things.
