I did my CBT today with a local bike school and thoroughly enjoyed it. It were Great! I've never ridden a motorbike before so I'm a total newbie and it's a lot different to driving a car, but dead good.

I'm tempted to do the Direct Access course and obtain a full bike license but it's £££££

I've been quoted £200 flat tuition fee which includes the theory test. They recommend minimum 3 training days on 125CC bikes @ £50 per day for the hire of bike and eqpt.

Then the Direct Access Course costs £328 including Practical test and 3 days hire of a 500CC bike at £90 per day.

I make that £678!!!!

Is this too much, or par for the course? The training days are full days from 9am till 4pm and the instructors spend a lot of time with you and are very good at what they do.

6 days + cbt sounds a bit excessive.

Have you got previous road experience (ie driving a car, etc)?

I've got a full car license and I've done an advanced car test as well. Never been on a bike though. I was asking the other guys at the bike school what they'd paid and they alll seem to be paying a similar amount, although some had booked everything all in and got a bit of a discount. (£50 or so)

I thought I'd do the CBT to see whether I could actually ride before committing to the DAS. It just seems a bit on the dear side like.

I shouldn't have thought you'd need that much road time, then.

The six day course is usually for those that have never been on the road in a motor vehicle at all.

Some places give a 'free assesment' - might be worth seeing if you can do this and they reccomend a shorter training time.

Would have thought you'd probably only need the three days on a 500cc bike.

Thanks, I'll ask them about that. They did say that if I was ready to move onto 500's after one or two days on 125's then I could do.

I would like another go on a 125 before moving on just so I know I've got the hang of the controls.

I was thinking of doing some ringing round, but they have a good reputation and the instructors seem spot on.

My das course, including the cbt, 2 days on a 125 and 3 on a 500 was 635, so sounds about right.

Ive been driving a car for 6 years or so, but decided the more training and time on the bike the better Smile

I paid about the same - seems to be the going rate, more or less (£600 at a place in Scunthorpe).

Thanks for the reassurance. I reckon it is actually par for the course. If I get up to speed on the training days on the 125's then I could save some money by going on to the 500's early.

How great are bikes though? Why wasn't I informed earlier?

It's not a bad price for the training they've offered. The going rate is usually around £500-£600 for 5 days. But, I'd suggest you do the theory test yourself (get online and book it) at a cost of £21.50. Then ask them for 3 days tuition on the 500cc bike plus the test on the last afternoon (forget about any more time on the 125cc, your CBT was enough you don't need any more on it). That should save you £150 in 125cc bike hire alone and should also save £89.25 on instruction as it is 3 days less.

£438.75 is a much better price, and even if you were unlucky and failed, you could pay for an extra day's tuition, bike hire and test fee at an additional £177.75, which would still work out over £50 cheaper!

I've managed to find £300 down the back of the sofa so definitely going for it. The tuition fee is non negotiable, however if I fail, then I don't get charged any more for extra tuition. That's a good idea to do the theory meself so I'm gonna book it within the next couple of weeks. I'm still looking for an alternative bike school though.

I paid £745 for my DAS but that was

- CBT
- 2 days 125
- 2 days 500
- theory test
- use of equipment (ie gloves, water proofs, helmet, etc)
- full insurance (if you broke anything you didnt have to pay more for it)
- bike hire
- practical test
- also if you failed your practical test te first time they give you free bike hire for any test after that (something i am finding very useful after 3 attempts so far)

The training school is excellent just i get very nervous on tests and do stupid things!
