Hi. Woke up this morning completely disoriented, and have been spending the day feeling like I'm going to fall over and like there's a kind of fog between the world and myself.
I almost fell over in the shower this morning becuase I closed my eyes while washing my hair. I seem to have lost any sense of internal equilibrium I used to have. I've had to concentrate more on my driving on my way to work, and even concentrate on how I walk so I don't stumble into a wall in front of my co-workers. Fortunately I'm able to spend most of the day in front of a computer, but even now I feel like I'm going to fall off my chair. It's like the world keeps tilting and the only way I know which way is up is by using visual confirmation.

Any idea what's wrong? My fiance suggested maybe an inner ear infection, but could it be something else? I don't have a fever, just feel really detatched and out of it. I also don't have health insurance yet (doesn't kick in 'till end of next month) and can't afford to pay for visit to the doctor, so I'm sort of hoping it's something that will go away on its own, or something I can treat with something over the counter.

Thanks.

i get this to, especially when i am stressed or tired. when i broke up with the man i could not drive for a week because of it.

it could be an inner ear infection causing vertigo, ask your doc or pharmisist if theres something.

if its stress, chill out and get plenty of sleep. Wink

Go and see your GP tomorrow!

My dad has had a problem with his balance for the past few weeks. Been off for 6 weeks now, but there's nothing he can do. He can't drive, cant walk far so has to sit at home doing nothing.

GP keeps signing him off for two weeks...

Really go and see your GP asap.

one of our employees got rushed to hospital today like this, it turned out she had a low sugar level?!

I've also been feeling crap for 2 weeks, similar stuff but got an inkling its my sinus problems creeping in again.

Could be anything, go get it checked out, probably something simple like ear infection or urine infection but gp is best bet.... Thumbs Up

Sorry, I live in the States and have no health insurance, so I can't just go see a doctor about it. (would cost way too much).

Maybe there's something to the stress thing... just got back from a business trip. Could maybe also be low blood sugar; I got that for a while when I was a little girl.

I would definitely be trying to find out information from more reliable sources.

A bloke at work had loss of balance, hearing etc and ended up having to have some quite serious surgery that may have not been so bad if had had it looked at sooner.

So definitely try and find some reliable source of information, even if it isn't a 'real life' doctor.

Hi

Does it feel physical or psycological. Think ear infections often cause problems with balance.

However, think speaking to someone medically experienced is the best idea.

All the best

It sounds to me like you have an inner ear infection which would explain the loss of balance, have you been listening to bass heavy music? That can fracture bones in your ear leaving you dis-oriented for a week or two provided you don't damage it further.

Thanks for all the advice! If it continues for a couple of days, I'll shell out for a doc. As for now, it went away about mid-afternoon. Around 4-ish.

Makes me think maybe it was low blood-sugar after all. But if that was the case, why didn't it go away after my high glycemic index muffin this morning?

Ah well. Might be moving to the UK in September. NHS here I come Razz.

I'm not completely sure what you have, but since you have spacial difficulties aswell as improper balance then it is unlikely to be an ear infection, although this is not to be ruled out.

This might sound weird, but, it sounds a bit like: 'Alice in wonderland syndrome'. Yes...you read correctly.

Here is some info on it. Is this similar to your ailments?

My big ass medical dictionary wrote:
Alice in Wonderland syndrome (AIWS), or micropsia, is a disorienting neurological condition which affects human visual perception.

Subjects perceive humans, parts of humans, animals, and inanimated objects as appearing substantially smaller than in reality. Generally, the object perceived appears far away or extremely close at the same time. For example, a family pet, such as a dog, may appear the size of a mouse, or a normal car may look shrunk to scale. This leads to another name for the condition, namely, Lilliput sight or Lilliputian hallucinations, named after the small people in Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels. The condition is in terms of perception only; the mechanics of the eye are not affected, only the brain's interpretation of information passed from the eyes.

The syndrome is associated with, and perhaps in part caused by, the classical migraine headache. Occasionally, Alice in Wonderland syndrome is named as one of the first symptoms of mononucleosis. Micropsia can also be caused by complex partial epilepsy, and the actions of various psychoactive drugs (notably dextromethorphan).

Small children, usually between the ages of five and ten, form a large proportion of those afflicted by spontaneous temporary micropsia. Micropsia tends to occur during darkness, when the brain lacks visual size references.

Micropsia not only affects visual perception, but also one's hearing, sense of touch, and sometimes one's own body image; the syndrome continues even when the eyes are closed. Peripheral symptoms include anxiety, apraxia, and agnosia. Micropsia is also commonly related to patients suffering schizophrenia.

The disorder is named after Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, where the title character experiences many situations similar to those of micropsia and macropsia. Because Lewis Carroll recorded at least one episode of classical migraine, scholars have speculated that he may have experienced this syndrome himself.

I hope this helps. Thumbs Up

Yep, it was an ear problem that the bloke at work started with, but was a bit more serious than an 'infection'.

Not trying to sound /too/ scary and don't remember the exact details, however because he didn't get it seen to earlier, after the operation he has lost the use of his right eye and some of the right side of his face; though he is looking a lot more 'normal' these days.

Sounds like mild Vertigo to me. I had this about a year ago, and couldn't get out of bed for 3 days because as soon as I stood up the room swayed and I'd fall over. Do you feel nauseous at all? It can give you a kind of sea sick feeling.

It started off quite mild for me and I felt exactly the same as you are describing, then it got worse. See your GP asap. I could only talk to mine on the phone and he gave me tablets called 'Buccastem'. They cleared it up enough for me to stand up without falling over, and it went in about a day. Hope this helps and you feel better soon! Thumbs Up

Just wanted to give you all an update:

I feel a lot better today. For some reason I kept feeling like I was falling as I tried to go to sleep last night, but I woke up as normal as could be this morning.

Could have been low blood sugar, or possibly stress. I've been insanely stressed lately. But if it comes back, I'll definitely go see someone about it.

Really wouldn't want to lose an eye...

Fingers crossed it isnt for you hun

Alice In Wonderland Syndrome
Never knew it exsisted until now, I knew it was an chemical imbalance bit like epilepsi. The dr's couldn't find anything wrong when I was a child,

Quote:
What Is "Alice In Wonderland" Syndrome? You're hallucinating, and you know it. Time is messed up. First it seems slowed, then it seems to be speeding up. Even more noticeably, when you look at your body, it seems to be morphing. You're getting smaller. Minutes later, you're growing larger and larger.

This is something I have suffered with for years and still do, everything around me slows down but I am moving at speed, things look like they are in a distance but if i reach out to grab them they are in front of me. It usually happens when I'm stressed out.

I thought low Blood Sugar, but if you had ear infection you would usually know cause it really hurts. Maybe stress, or vertigo. and you cant be pregnant unless you are a seahorse and havent told us. Make sure you get checked out, dizziness can be from a lot of things. Maybe get a CT scan thingy or check what youre eating. No nasty chemicals around where you live etc? Think about environmental factors as well. I wouldnt go riding if you are that dizzy either!

Thanks for all the advice. Since that one day last week, I haven't had any recurrence.

Kind of bugs me that I don't know what was wrong, but it never works out well if I go to a doctor after all the symptoms have passed. I always just get the "oh, don't know what that could be, if it happens again, call me" routine.
