I am having a digital camera bought for me in the next few days and would like to know what the best I can get for about £200 would be.

I would like decent photo's and it to take photo's fairly quickly. Good video with sound would be a big bonus too.

I dont want to get a second hand on ebay I want a brand new one.

I have been looking at the canon ixus 65 which can be had for £220ish

What would you guys reccomend?

Thanks.

Not digital but does it really matter? The photo quality is on par with the latest D1 something from Olympus, built in flash, manual battery.

Can import them from China from you for a snip under £200. Pm me if you want one, they'll all go soon.

Most importantly it needs to be small enough to fit into the small peeking hole I have drilled between mine and my sisters bedroom.

Any ideas?

You're paying for portability with the IXUS. If you're not too bothered about size, a larger bodied camera from the Canon 'S' range would take better quality photos, have far less shutter lag and more features for same/similar money.

I've researched this question several times in the past, and ended up spending lots of money on super high resolution cameras with all the bells and whistles, but more than 95% of the time, I use them in the semi automatic mode. On retrospect I would probably have got as good pictures a much cheaper price with a lower spec digital camera, and my manual film camera would probably be more fun to use when attempting creative photography. You can get excellent film cameras for a song nowadays, should the creative bug bite you.

Thats why I fancied the ixus 65, like the 60 only a little better for a similer price tag (bigger screen too).

I will probably end up going for an ixus as all the magasines rave about them.

Actually, an iso200 roll of film is closer to 20 megapixels as a digital equivalent. Razz

Before long, digital will rule!

digital won't rule , 35mm will just be like LPs you know those black dics that are still quite popular it seems and form a niche market ,

I still haven't seen a digital camera where you can do the spy trick,

that is to take a photo of a secret document, then put the photo on your back wall and take a normal photo that won't stand out say your GF sitting on the sofa.

you can blow the image up , projecting it on a wall and still read stuff on the original document , I remember stories of credit card fraud being done by people seeing credit cards on dressers in old photos and blowing them up.

And why couldn't you do that with a digital camera?

Take a picture, print it out, take another picture with that printout in the background.

You seem to think that 35mm film cameras have an infinate resolution, allowing the photos to be enlarged indefinately without any loss of quality (pixelisation in the digital sense).

Perhaps if you look into film construction, you will realise why it has an equivalent resolution of approx 20megapixels.
Once digital sensors exceed 20 megapixels, digital photography will be better than using 35mm film, allowing for greater 'enlargement' of photographs without losing image quality.

but as said it still doesn't and the fact that taking pictures at hi res compared to say lots at lower res , is harsh on batteries and to a lesser (now but used to be) mem card space.

Playing around in the south taking photos of damaged stock , I could take plenty of low res pics , but higher res stuff the batteries in that sony (which was the bosses) didn't last long,

While me on my epic trip in 2002 , with my Nikon SLR in the middle of nowhere and a small bundle of films did fine.

But as said its horses for courses ,
