Hi everyone,
Basically, I've heard you can get some kind of card that you put into a laptop, and you can then get internet without a phoneline.
Anyone have any info on how these work, how much they cost etc.?

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Tom

GPRS cards?

Contract seem to start at around £25/month, with a charge for how much data you use.

Vodaphone do 'em.

It isn't very quick (well, it's about 56k speed) and is designed completly for people on the move, on a train or whatever, so don't think of it as a substitute for a proper home net connection.

It's not quick and quite expensive at the moment, BUT, within a couple of years they are hoping to have speeds of 20meg and will hopefully be a reasonable price, certainly enough to make a lot of people give up their adsl lines at home.

I am fairly certain it'll be a 12 month contract, so personally I wouldn't bother.

Remember it's £25 odd per month, plus the data you use, that will no doubt be over a quid a MB.

There's also the faster option of 3G cards, though signal coverage isn't brilliant so it will (apparently) frequently drop back to GPRS.

A cheaper option is using your existing mobile and hooking it up to your computer using the supplied cable or bluetooth.
Read your instructions for info on how to do this, and give your service provider a call to find out how much GPRS costs you. This will typically be £3-4 per 1mb though they will offer you data bundles for an additional monthly fee.

I think I pay £4 for 4mb on Orange, though you can get a 25MB bundle for £16 and I'm sure they do unlimited bundles too, though that may be for business contracts only.

I tested a Vodafone GPRS and 3G card a couple of years back, the 3G was ok (384k max transmission), but was expensive and coverage was poor. Probably improved by now I suppose.

Maybe just get a wireless card, and then see if there is anyone nearby with broadband, which you can nobble for a while... Wink

Tell you what you want to do, buy broadband, the modem comes with it, theyll set that up for you fine, then buy a wireless router (£30-40) and a wireless laptop card, would cost you around 20-30 pounds. hook the wireless up to your router, insert your card and your laughing! broadbands cheap now days (cheaper than a GPRS card) however this is only suitable if you want to be using this at home. This is ideal because after the initial investment all you need to pay for monthly is broadband, no GPRS card rental or line rental fees, no limits, no hassle! If you want further advice feel free to mail me.

He wants it without a phoneline due to moving house, so broadband isn't any use.

Do you have a GPRS enabled mobile phone?

I can get mobile Internet access via my V3x.

As said, it isn't that fast though.
