No, you need to insure the bike before you ride it away.

There may be a way around it.
My insurance covers me third party to ride any other bike providing the owner gives me permission. The sale could be dated for the following day maybe? Not sure, just a thought.

you know anyone who can ride a motorbike? they could ride it back for you, just as long as the owner is still insured on it. Either that or you could find the insurance company you wanna use and get a reference number, then just activate it when your over there by mobile phone

I've never been asked to show any insurance docs. I cant see why the dealer would want to see them unless you were buying the bike on finance.

Well the thing is if you let a mate ride off on your bike knowing he isn't insured you'll be introuble , its the same thing with bike dealers, they just have to take reasonable steps to protect themselves from such an eventuallity,

its like the local cornershop , when selling booze to 5 year olds (oh yes they do) , they ask are you working for a cop? , are you a cop?, covers their ass.

as the enticement principle applies , not quite entrapment as in the US , but a customs and excise case of smuggling collasped totally and masses of compo had to be paid due to enticement,

When I sold my 125, I had to drive it to the new owners house (condition of sale).

I bumped into this problem too, when buying my 125, and yes you definitely need insurance to drive away your bike! Just because you have just purchased the bike, doesn't make it any different from riding under any other circumstances. Anyhow, quite apart from being illegal, you wouldn't want to pick up the bike without insurance - what if you trashed the bike on the way home!?

The trick is to sort out your insurance first, and ask the insurer to start the cover on a set date and time (you can get them to activate it at a set point in the future, say a couple of hours before you expect to pick up the bike).

Either that, or get the owner to drive it to you, and buy him/her a train ticket back home (that's what I did). If you've just passed your CBT, you don't wanna be driving hundreds of miles on busy roads back home! Mind you, you'll still want to arrange your insurance to start when the bike arrives!

And if a young person makes a claim on Fully Comp insurance they'll probably have wasted more money than if they had gone TPO and bought a second bike when they trashed the first one.

I've never been asked for an insurance certificate when I've bought bikes from dealers, doesn't make it any more legal to ride them home, though.

You can get an insurance quote then call up when you pick the bike up to take it out.
If you're getting a friend to collect it, they have to have insurance which specifies that it covers riding other bikes.

why don't you want to get insurance before hand ?

know ebikeinsurance can insure you right away if you phone them or go online, just put the start time as 1/2 hour from now.

Could just get 3rd party cheap then upgrade it later.

If it hasn't got tax or MOT can book a test for later that day and then your on your way to get it tested, other wise your insurance would be void as your driving the bike illegal.

Have a guy that picks bikes up at amazingly good rates, did mine London to Manchester for £90.

I've bought a couple of bikes from dealers, never been asked for insurance documents.

Why should they care? It's not up to them, or any of their business, what you do with it.
