First Post here, so Hi Everyone! Smile

Basically, I'm 16 and am really into getting into biking, not moped stuff, but proper motorbiking, if you catch my drift...I've read loads of articles and what not on the internet about the CBT and A1/A2 license, and I get the idea that once you've done these you can ride a 125cc at 17, and a 50cc at 16. So in the hope of searching for some nice 50cc sports replica's (if all goes well with GCSE's, my dad will buy me one Very Happy) I have got this list;

Rieju RS2
Yamaha TZR 50
Aprilia RS50
Motorhispania RX50

Not in any particular order, but I really like the look of the Rieju, so what do you all think? Should I get one of these bikes, or wait till next year to get a 125?

Also, do I just have to do the CBT and A1+get insurance to ride these, or do a A2 as well?

Thanks a lot, and sorry for the huge list of questions, I promise to stop being a noob as soon as possible Thumbs Up

Yes do that Thumbs Up

Plus it will give you a year to save up a bit of money yourself to get an even nicer bike.

You just need the CBT to ride up to 125cc/14.6bhp.

To ride a bike as a learner all you need to do is a cbt , no test (and insurance of course). I wouldnt bother buying one of the above, just get the cheapest 50 scooter you can and save your money up for a decent 125 when you are 17. You will get road experience that way too Thumbs Up

With just a CBT you must display L plates, not carry a pillion passenger, and not go on motorways. If you want to be able to do all of the above, you will need the A1 (light), A2 (restricted), or A motorcycle license, which will require a theory and practical test to obtain.

Wow, thanks for the quick relies Smile

I was thinking of just waiting to get a 125, but I'll have to wait till February, and my main reason of wanting a bike is that I do not want to catch the bus to my new college...It's full of chavs and there's speedbumps everywhere on the route, it just makes me sick Sick

Also, theres no way I'm riding a scooter. There's just something about them that I can't stand...Can't quite put my finger on it, but its there...

Then again, it could be the seating position, and that noise Neutral

I'm 50:50 now on what to do... Confused

By the way, out of the above bikes are any notorious for being defective or anything? And which would you recommend? (Apart from waiting for a 125 Wink )

I'd say the TZR, although I don't think Yamaha make them anymore. The RS50 is overpriced for what it is. I'd stay away from the other two simply because they are less common makes, and therefore parts availability may be a problem - not knocking their quality or anything, I'm sure they're fine on the road.

Thats alright, the only one I've every seen on the road is the RS50, and I wasn't concidering buying new, so I think I'll be ok on that front Thumbs Up

I was the same as you, didn't want a scooter AT all and my dad knew that hence the DNA. Ok so they're TAGs but it's a cheap-ish runaround and looks like a "bike" more than peds.

so gonna get flamed by some here for saying DNA is a bike Wink

good choice Thumbs Up

I would say get one, if you wait until you are 17 that means you will have to catch the bus to college for about 5 months. I don’t know about you but i know i wouldn’t want to do that, that’s why i got a 50. I would go for the rs2 or rx50, just because they will be much cheaper than the rs 50 and probably more reliable. Just make sure you don’t spend to much on a 50, and don't buy new, as they do depreciate a lot in the first few years.

Getting a 50 gives you an extra years NCB for insurance, you'll need less lessons for you test and you'll really learn how to ride a bike. The road skills you learn on a 50 are vital.

Just don't buy a new 50 or expect it to be fast.

I thought Yamaha still made the TZR 50? As someone above says, DONT buy a new one. As well as depreciating price you are likely to fall off in your first year. The DNA 50 would be a good option. Get road experience first on an auto. Would make sense. Im not being patronising at all but at 16 you think you are invinceable and i have seen some kids doing stupid things on RS's and the like thinking they are good on a sporty looking bike .

Thanks Steve Smile

After a bit of research, the prices I'm getting for a decent model for each are:

Rieju ~ £1000
Yamaha ~ £900
Aprilia ~ £600-£1400 (Depending on Age..)
Motorhispania ~ £1000

So...Looks like the Aprilia is the cheapest, but that might be because my research skills are sub-par Wink

Also, what sort of insurance quotes should I be aiming for?

(I promise to stop asking questions soon. Honest.)

You seem adament on one of those 4 and aren't listening to what people say so just get whatever YOU want.

About insurance, run quotes up, we don't know where you live, where it will be placed etc.

Those DNA's are actually quite cheap, and look alright as well, especially in blue Cool

Hows the ride on it? The handlebars look a bit low on the pics, but that just may be my lack of experiance in these matters Wink

Being my first bike not really got anything to compare handling / performance too. Although the front does want to fall into the corner alot due to the weight distribution.

Having said that, I only noticed it once I read it and was looking out for it.

*Touch wood* Not came off yet, and pretty quick. I'd recommend one. Mine cost me 500, insurance 300. That was in a bad area in my front garden overnight.

Its true you can find rs50s cheaper, but they are knackered, normally have like 20k on the clocks. For £1000 you can get a rieju with about 5k on the clocks. rs50s are well known for being very unreliable, so dont touch old and cheap ones

Fair Point, I'll take that into consideration Smile

By the way, do these bikes, and the DNA, count as 'Mopeds'? I was reading on this site >>https://www.motorcycle-training.f2s.com/training.html

and it seems that at 16 you can only ride a 'Moped', what exactly would they define a 'Moped'. It also states '(50 cc capable of less than 50Km/h)' are all these bikes we are discussing less then 50kph, or would you have to limit them?

Cheers Thumbs Up

Think all 50cc's are mopeds and 125's scooters.

Plenty of threads about restriction, should I derestrict etc. I personally have mine derezzed. I'd feel a plonka flat out at 30 MPH down the ring road.

All restricted 50ccs are mopeds and almost all are restricted when new. Basicly no one keeps them restricted as they have no acceleration and driving along 30mph is lethal, mine was restricted for about a month and i would never ride a restricted bike ever again. Its costs about £80 to get a bike derestricted by a garage

Get an off road style one like a senda or the above MX?.

A- cheaper
B- cheaper to fix
C- Better use of 9bhp
D- Easier to maintain
E- You look less silly sat upright at 45.767 MPH than you do bent right over.

Is it legal to de-restrict one of these at 16? Would you have to declare it on insurance?

By the way, whats the performance on a 50cc like, I heard they are all basically the same engine, so whats top speed/0-60 like? Thumbs Up

++Edit++
cagiva gezzer, I can see the sensiblness of that option, but I just don't like MX bikes. Just personal taste, thats all Smile
