Hi, (posted this in wrong place originaly...DOH!) , I have my eye on the following

Yamaha XVS 125 Dragstar
2000 'X' Reg
28800 miles
some rust but the seller is spending the next 3 weeks briniging it up to standard.

He's looking for around a grand (once the work is done). I am a complete newbie and would really appreciate some honest advice. For one thing, is that a massive mileage for a bike? Should I expect problems soon?

Failing that, a local dealership has a Virago 125, 04 plate, nice nick for £1395. I like it, but prefer the Dragstar. Also, the money I would save would come in handy for some gear, and I have a couple of 'machanic type' mates!

Thanks very much in advance,
Cammy.

Look on biketrader for a 2000ish Honda NSR. A few people will probably tell you to get something like an Aprillia RS which are great for speed but reliability wise they are not so great. The Honda NSR is a great first bike that inspires confidence and will soon have you riding as though you have been for years. You should be able to pick one up that is not too old for a grand or maybe less. I got a 2002 NSR R-R for £1,500 which only had 2611 miles on it.

The mileage on that Yamaha dragster does not seem too bad to me although I think you could probably get it slightly cheaper. I have two NSR's, one being a j reg 92 model and that has just covered 36k on the meter and even then most of these were in KM as it was only converted a year or two back.

What you should do is buy a copy of the bike trader magazine. In the front of every issue you get some excellent sound advice on what to look for and what checks to do on a bike when you view it. Its surprisingly easy stuff to do and will help you in getting a good bargain and best of all may even help you miss out on buying a lemon!
