I was talking to my eldest sister last night who's recently moved down to Brighton & ended up being on the blunt end of one of her 'I hate you wanky bikers' rants.
She then proceeded to go on about how we are all rude, arrogant idiots who think we own the road, cut drivers up, appear out of no-where wearing very little & giving offensive gestures all the time whilst endangering ourselves & everyone else on the road.
Nothing I could say to her would get her to think 'hmmm maybe I'm wrong' (but then knowing my sis I should of known any attempt to would be fruitless ).
So I'm wondering.....Do you often find yourselves defending bike riders on the whole? And if so what do you say to them to quell the prejudice? ____________________ My Precioussss!, My Bikes, The Lord & Master, Canis Lupus!

I think she's has a point. Pro rata there are far more nutters on bikes than in cars (i think vans give us some competition). |

But i just tell them to fuck off, do a rolling burnout over their heads and let off the brake and go into a 60mph wheelie through a school playground ____________________ >RidingSkills<->Tech Tips<->MyBikes< |

Usually I just say "Well, I'm not like that..." and leave it there. The thing about it is, we all are hooligans to some extent, for example I found myself filtering on the M4 at 80mph the other evening because my bike is so dull on the motorway (Which I don't think is too bad in the scheme of things, but it isn't how a police rider would behave for example) . The reason its dull is because it can't do 150mph like my previous bike. Which is a very very good thing for my license! (incidentally before you all pounce on that, my bike is exciting on all roads apart from motorways. OK? )
Whatever bike we ride, and however good a rider we are, we all break speed limits and we all do things (no matter how small) that we would not do if we were to obey every rule in the Highway code.
I'm just careful to not piss people off where possible. But if people are going to get pissed off by seeing you do something that doesn't really affect them, but they take exception to it, then you aren't going to stop it.
For example my neighbour came up to me the other day and said: " I was up at cheddar gorge the other day. Lots of bikes there. Some of them were doing over a hundred miles an hour!"
I just replied: "Yeah some of them do, my bike looks nice but it isn't built for going that fast."
(don't take the piss)
My bike will do 130, but what he doesn't know won't kill him!! ____________________ British beauty: Triumph Street Triple R; Loony stroker: KR1S; Track fun: GSXR750 L1; Commuter Missile: GSX-S1000F

I get this a lot, especially rants about how "this idiot came from nowhere and cut in just in front of us" I reply if you werent so dozy and paid more attention you'd have seen it, "bikers always have to do the thinking for you", I tell them ____________________ TL1000s, KDX200 |

I get it quite a bit, but it doesn't really bother me.
Reply depends who I'm talking to, generally a bit more restrained, especially with people higher up in my company .
Going to get a push bike that I got on ebay I mentioned to the woman (was her son that sold it) that I was selling a motorbike when she mentioned her sun was selling his motorbike as well.
"I bet your family are glad you're getting out of biking she says" - I go on to explain how I'm just packing to go Motorcycle racing - and go on about how you /can/ be safe if the rider actually puts some effort in etc. |

Your eldest sister (in order) obviously does not understand defensive driving, which is a very important part of staying alive, cutting drivers up, mostly because we are getting out of the way of a hazard the blind cagers dont see, or because we know its safe to do so, we only appear out of no where because she hasnt seen us before, which is plainly obvious to the rider hence the gestures. Also how many bike to bike accidents have you heard of? Not very many i guess. And you dont see many people complaining when you see a cyclist without a helmet on, even if they fall off and crack thier head off a curb, they could acctually die, but they choose to take the risk.
Yes some of us ride like twats, but none of us want to die, and for that simple reason there must be an amount of safety or thinking involved with what every rider does. Your sister obviously hasnt been to your local boy racer meeting place, i can gaurentee its much worse there. ____________________ Will work for petrol

I absolutely agree with this.
I have found that those that express the opinion that bikers cut people up/appear from nowhere etc generally are people that can't drive particularly well.
The kind of people that think their reir view mirror is something that looks shiny and utterly functionless.
The type that think, if they indicate, it makes every manouver perfectly legal and safe.
The type that drive at 42mph no matter what the speed limit.
That being said, I can understand how we can appear aggressive. In traffic we generally sit far closer to the car in front of us in a position ready to whizz past when the opportunity arrives, in stationary traffic we squeeze through gaps that we know are wide enough to fit a Goldwing through - but to someone with no spcial awareness find impossible as passing a camal through the eye of a needle.
If I gestuculate in an angry manner, it is because you have just nearly killed me - not because I am rude and aggressive.
Ignore her Helen, tell her to shut up and learn to drive ____________________ Avast! Pirates ahoy!

Almost every week I am defending it for something.
My flat mate isn’t a fan of bikes, TBH nothing which could scare him, possibly due to the fact he’s knows almost nothing about bikes doesn’t help the matter either.
He thinks you’re lucky you manage to stay upright and that coming off is just something that will happen, as much as I try to ignore it, the pure arrogance of the opinion annoys me as I’ve probably had less accidents and or near misses than him in his cager years.
My parents don’t like the fact I have a Ninja now, my old man knows what the bikes about, a thorough bred race machine that I commute on.
But I find it’s only as dangerous as you want make it, and cagers certainly know how to put themselves in danger.
As said in a post above we do have to think for some people, give them a wide birth and basically cater for their actions.
I was on the dual carriageway the other day, some bloke in a Mondeo, on the phone, was looking as if he was going to cut in front of me, I held back and watched the display, sure enough he would have casually ploughed into me as I came up the side of him. But I saved him the insurance pay out and guilt trip by making sure he didn’t have the chance.
As I passed him safely I pointed at my head to indicate to him that he should be paying attention. ____________________ Cleverly disguised as a responsible adult.
