Well they chased my mate (albeit they stopped eventually) who was pissed, stoned, no lid on, at 1 in the morning, on icy and damp roads...

So thats bollocks.

In defence of my mate, he was just pratting around in the town doing rolling burnouts while we walked to our mates, and the coppers came to nick him, hence he scarpered sharpish.

I toatly agree with what the coppers done

I wouldnt want my kids getting hit by a lunatic or even the police car

If they stop chasing, the theives will get to a safe place, dump the bike then get lost, Id much rather let someone get away with it than risk lives of loads of people

See that argument makes sense to an extent.

Except they happily chase someone whos booting it like a madman through a busy residential/pedestrian area in a 4x4/impretza etc who will be going far faster, and is in a vehicle whose energy (mass x speed) will be FAR great then a ped doing 30/40.

It was the "early hours of the morning", who's around to hit?

If they won't give chase under those circumstances they won't give it under any.

I wonder if you'd feel the same if it was your bike.

The kids will probably wreck the bike before it is recovered, possibly burn it out - the owner will still have to pay recovery.
A teenager may find it more expensive in future insurance to claim than not.

I don't see why not having a helmet (the reason given by the police for not chasing) makes them more likely to not ride into anyones kids, or for the police to hit anyone.

well, it's a 180cc gilera vx125, my old vx125 could pull off 85mph happily. this is a vx125 with a big bore kit. god knows what speed. the thing is, the helmet wouldn't really do anything even if they had it on, it's not really as if the kids are going to nick it in full leathers Razz

one of the reasons the police decided not to chase was that if the kids fell off they could sue the police for causing the accident. crazy i know.

Should the fact that they stole the bike and rode it without a helmet by their own free will not cancel out the ability to sue?

It's time people were forced to take responsibility for their own actions instead of always trying to find someone to blame.

"I want to sue the police for chasing me because I fell off a scooter that I stole and hurt myself because I was not wearing a helmet." Thumbs Down

Is the government trying to save us from ourselves really just making things more complicated and making people blame everyone else for their own mistakes?

that's the argument that "the express" (the newspaper) was saying. that because as a result of commiting a crime, the offender was injured, it should negate their ability to sue. unfortunately that's not how it works Razz hence that whole, if you get burgled and the burglar injures himself in your home, you are liable for damages.

Had the police given chase and one of the scallys or even a member of the public was injured or killed as a result of that pursuit I am sure it would be all over the papers that the police were responsible for it, and for what? A Moped. Police forces will not take the risk.

Bikes really are a grey area. We have strict instructions to not even attempt to stop a bike. Rolling Eyes

So if you want to commit a crime, do it on two wheels.
