Thought i'd share with you my daily rant, it helps lower my rocketing blood pressure:

Just round the corner from my house, on a route i use daily, within a half mile stretch, there are 3 sets of the longest pelican crossing lights in the world - i'm sure even my dead grandmother could rise from her grave, get on the train for the 200 mile journey, and still drag her fetid corpse across the road before the lights changed to green again.
Anyway, what really peeves me, is bloomin pedestrians who walk straight up to the crossing, and before they've even looked up the road (it's a 50mph dual carriageway, so they only have to look one way ffs) they hit the button on the crossing.
Every day i have to sit for what feels like an eternity at a red light on an empty crossing, empty because the road isn't really that busy and the pedestrian has crossed long before the lights have changed.
Phew, having got the load off my chest, i'd like to point out that this isn't a rant against pedestrian crossings, it's a rant against people that hit the button before they've even looked at the traffic. I used to go out with a girl who'd been hit by a car as a kid; she wouldn't cross the road except at a red light - that i can understand, it's the push first, look second people that really feck me off.
Rant over.

write to the council ask for a puffin crossing upgrade , which changes only when somebody is waiting and changes back pretty sharpish when there is nobody there,

that said in the summer cooking in my gear (better sweat than road rash) , it seems lights are taking forever and my engine overheats oh so quickly.

Nice Idea, there seem to be a lot of complaints about that stretch of road in my local paper allready - mainly due to the bright spark that decided they needed to turn a set of traffic lights on at an unused junction - a junction that probably won't be open for several years from now!!! I especially enjoy waiting at lights for traffic to emerge out of a road from a place that doesn't yet exist.

I agree too. Your unreasonable rant seems very reasonable to me too Smile

Itchy's idea to get it changed to a puffin crossing seems like a sensible idea

There's a traffic light in Warrington (If you know it, it's a set of lights opposite the Murco garage on the way from the Town Centre to Widnes from a back road).

It doesn't detect bikes on its induction loop, so I have to jump the lights, or wait 20 minutes for a car.

Oi Toby,

The light near me were doing that.
I e-mailed the council and they fixed it in 3 days Thumbs Up

Was quite surprised with the response tbh.
(Even if it only takes one guy to increase the sensitivity with a scredriver or some such)

They even mailed me back when finished to see if it had fixed the issue.

Seriously, that’s nothing…..

VTR-SP1 will back me up on this, the road layouts in Cheltenham/Gloucester are appalling….

I used to take the A4019 (Tewkesbury road) this will take you straight out of Cheltenham and towards Tewkesbury or Gloucester, I use it to get onto the M5 to Ashchurch.

Take a look at the map below, the ringed area is where I live, and the A4019 is the stretch of road. To Combe hill it is around 5 miles, so it’s about 4 miles to the M5 junction 10.
If I took this route I encounter no less than 15 sets of lights, bearing in mind that the dual carriage way doesn’t have any up to the Junction so it’s probably 3 miles of stopping and starting.

My addition to the rant:

Lots of the lights in London were changed a few years ago and made shorter for traffic and stay green longer for pedestrians. The thing that really pees me off is that once the green pedestrian light goes out there is a long pause before the red pedestrian light shows, then another long pause before the waiting traffic gets a green light.

What this means is that pedestrians get to the side of the road and seeing their green light change they wait, and wait, and wait and then step into the road just as you are pulling forward.

AND - why is it everyone on a mobile phone thinks it gives them invisible superpowers that allow them dawdle across the road without being knocked down???

Because it does, the mobile phone gives people special powers, it is even rumoured people can drive a massive 4x4 whilst talking on one and still be able to fully concentrate on the roads Laughing

Are there ever any red light cameras on these sensor-operated traffic lights? That would be really low if there were...

to be honest, if the pedestrian crossing is clear with no one wanting to cross but its on red, i just ignore it.

I dont think Id ever do this at a junction even if it was really quiet unless it was the no detection thing toby mentioned.
