Whilst in the middle of one of my other projects (honda vfr400, see sig).
I decided to pull out an old frame that was given to me a long time ago.
The only RGV parts i have are the vj21 chassis and the bottom yoke.
Not needing the VFR front end i had just pulled off i was surprised to see that the VFR forks fitted the RGV bottom yoke.

And so starts 'Project HONDZUKI'.

https://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr119/Timon1983/VFR%20400%20nc30/Photo039-1.jpg

Parts I have for the project;

RGV vj21 chassis
RGV vj21 bottom yoke
Honda FMX650 engine and loom
Honda VFR400 complete front end
Honda VFR400 rear wheel
Honda VFR400 grp race seat unit
Honda VFR400 swingarm and hub etc

Parts i need;

RGV vj21 top yoke
RGV vj21 fuel tank
Honda VFR400 grp race fairing

This is a project built from all the parts I already have and with the intention of building a budget race bike. All parts donations accepted Wink

Because I am changing all the rear shock mounts for VFR linkages I want to be careful to keep the nimble RGV geometry. These are the dimensions I will be using.

https://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr119/Timon1983/RGV%20Hondzuki/untitled-2.jpg

Does anyone have the swingarm pivot height so i can jig the bike up?

The RGV vj21 also uses an 18 inch rear wheel, this means I can keep the 8 degrees swingarm droop angle (although i might raise it to 9 degrees to get jack the rear of the bike up slightly)

Last night i also found out the VFR swingarm spindle diameter is perfect for the RGV frame, machined the frame out slightly and the swinarm is in with gaps either side so i can centre it later on with spacers.

Also trail fitted the seat unit. Will get some pics up soon.

Pics as promised Wink

Swingarm is in and aligned, measured the whole bike to get a good centre line. Then 'stringed' it (gotta love the old school) just to check. Just need to get the spacers made up and that will be the swingarm done.

https://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr119/Timon1983/RGV%20Hondzuki/Photo002.jpg

The shock and linkages, however, is a whole other saga to be tackled.

Also pulled the motor out to offer it up, its going to be quite a squeeze to say the least.

How will you over come chain alignment issues?

The chain runs past the frame fine, there is quite a nice gap.

As for the engine, i'm not 100% on the positon (weight distribution calcs etc) yet but the general idea is far back as I can get it. May have to raise or tilt the engine slightly to get the chain alignment right.

THis looks really interesting I will be following this, good luck Thumbs Up

Would sort of power is the FMX engine putting out? will you be doing any work on it? What exhaust will you be using? I can't imagine the standard FMX exhaust would fit a sports bike chassis and fairings.

Thanks bud

The lump is only stock at about 37hp & 38ftlbs (ref-bikez.com), might do a bit of engine work (skim, flowing, cams etc) after the bike is done and tested.

Hopefully be able to source a decent 'race' header pipes and then make the rest of the exhaust to suit the bike.

EDIT

OH forgot to say the standard headers are very restricting on them and if I had them I still wouldn't use them.

What I was getting at is that the FMX pipes go round the side of the engine I'm not sure they would fit in a deltabox frame especialling with a fairing. I would have thought you would need specially made pipes that go under the engine.

Not thought that far a head to be honest but yeah you're right I would run the exhausts under rather around.

this is all great and everything... but whats the point?
less powerful than both an RGV and a VFR.

I love it too, good on ya. A unique bike that should look good, handle well, cost very little and be a hoot to build.

I'll watch this intently.

Swapped some of my other parts just hanging around for a RGV tank (with only one small dint that easily filled) and a RGV top yoke.

https://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr119/Timon1983/RGV%20Hondzuki/Photo0024.jpg

Trail fitted the seat unit, i think it works well.

As for the name its going to be 'Hondzuki RFX650R' (Rgv + vFr + fmX + 650cc + Racing)

No problem bud. Yep, could wait to see the tank on the bike Wink

Yeah cut the swingarm pivot mounts backto fit the swinger in. Going to box in the chassis a bit for some extra strength.

Already cut the bottom linkage mount off the bike and unbolted the top shock mount.

I've been plotting a similar project to this but i was planning a supermono track bike so i was thinking a 70bhp motor is what to aim for. Why not get it going with the free engine, then when cash is more available upgrade to something special? Smile

It's one thing to think and talk about things but quite another to just get on with it. Full marks for effort so far Thumbs Up

Getting 70bhp out of a single will be expensive an unreliable, a mates Husaberg had about 70bhp It was a 650 IIRC and that required an oil change every 3 hours.
