I have two rubber tubes that go down the back of my engine on the right hand side. One has an open end and I believe it is the fuel tank overflow pipe. The other one has a rubber cap on it, which always seems to be wet with oil.

When I was cleaning the bike I noticed the inside of my fairing had some oil on it too. It seems to be leaking from this tube, it's gone from about 3/4 up the dipstick to the minimum line in one week (about 450 miles).

Does anyone know what this tube is and why it would be leaking oil? Confused

If its coming from the fuel tank then im guessing its a breather pipe, Have you ever left a plastic jerry can out in the sun and noticed its sucked itself in? well that would happen to your tank if it didnt happen this.. and that isnt verrry good..

Anyway im guessing its normaly to have fuel spill out of there every now and again, it is on mine anyway Very Happy

A tube with a plug in the end is usually an airbox drain - you're supposed to unplug it every now and again to drain out anything that might be in there. My understanding has always been that this is for water that may get in through the intakes, but I've heard said on here its also to drain oil that gets blown into the airbox through the crankcase breather. Not convinced myself Smile

Easiest thing to do would be to follow the tube back, or at least give us a clue as to what bike it is!

It's a GS500.

It does seem to go up towards the carb/air box area. I'll double check tomorrow. But it is definently oil coming out not petrol Sad

In the short term I suggest you just unplug it and drain whatever is in there - there may just be a couple of cm of oil up there that took a very long time to accumulate and is now taking a very long time to leak out. In which case, no real problem.

If you're lucky...
