I sort of want to change my clocks on my NTV since the plastic casing is all cracked and leaks water when it rains ,

I've found 2 sets of clocks one from a courier who has done 135K , and another who has done 42K, I've done around 60K ,

My question is this whats the legal situation in changing clocks? , since I had a peek at me MOT and it was printed on the sheet 57500 miles , if I change me clocks it'll show a much lower milage , will this get me into trouble next time I take it for an MOT?, or will the MOT place think ah its gone round and add 100K to my MOT milage, since there is no way I'll be doing at leats 25K by the time I next get me MOT.

is Keeping me old clocks and bringing them to MOT a possibility?

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Isn't it possible to change the mileage on the new clocks?

sure it is , open them up remove the plastic cover and wind by hand , though this makes them unaligned and buyers of your bike deadly suspicious of its true milage even if it is genuine ie with MOT backup.

Fair enough, makes sense I suppose. How does the odometer work, does it run off the speedo? Maybe the MOT place has a machine that can move them forward?

Hi

No legal issues as long as you do not try and pretend that the new lower mileage is the real mileage.

All the best

if you were bored you could get the lower miles clocks , attach the speedo cable and wind it on by hand by turning the cable itself .

However i wouldn't like to take a guess at how many turns it would need Laughing

Yep, no problem as long as you don't misrepresent the mileage of the bike when you come to sell it.

The done thing in that case would be to tape over the odometer reading when displaying the bike for sale and verbally inform the potential buyer that you fitted a second hand clock and the correct mileage is xxxxx.

I'll tell the story again of my mate who decided he'd "knock a few miles off" his 250 superdream before he sold it. When he got into the back of the clocks, he found a sticker with the words "Oh no!. Not again!" written on it. Laughing Rolling Eyes

EDIT: An electric drill on the end of the cable can be used to move the odometer round. Many of them wont go backwards though. I'm not sure how long it would take to take one 'round the clock' and back to where you want it.

It's probably easiest to get the 42K ones then wind then on to around 60K with an electric drill. Then there's no explaining and no mis-aligned numbers.

That would take hours. The 'easiest' way is Just leave them at 42k but if if you sell the bike tell the new buyer that you have had new clocks. Thumbs Up

Might well still take a while. Presume it would need to be kept within the normal speed range of the speedo, so say 150mph. That is 120 hours with a drill to get from 42k to 60k.

All the best

Keeping your old MOT certificates and the old clocks will be proof enough of mileage - I just replaced my Bandit clock for a new one since I broke the needle off the old one trying to get in to change the faces.

So long as you don't try and sell the bike as a lower mileage you'll be fine.

MOT shouldn't care that the old mileage and the new mileage are different, I took my bike for an MOT with about 30 miles on the clock, previous reading was 18 000, they didn't even query it.
