They really do take the mick, what with stupid charges for going overdrawn and taking 4 days to clear a cheque (during which time they earn money on your money). People have started to fight back with success providing you follow the format and keep your nerve. following is a website of how to do this, the website claims 100% success for anyone that has followed this proceedure, good luck - dont let them get away with it

they give you sample letters to use as well.

They can charge whatever they want because the know the majority of people are too stupid to change banks/building societies after being raped in the ass by the charges...

Hi,

I guess that was for several transactions. In one way they can as you have a contract with them which laid out the charges. However the powers that be have asked for them to be capped, some people are trying to claimback previous charges.

In the first case contact the bank/branch and ask for them to be removed as its a minor transgression If they wont remove th charge ask for it to be refered to customer relations.

Also see if you can increase you limit so it does not happen again.

Regards
Charlotte

On a related note, my dad heard a few weeks ago (during The Money Programme or something) that no bank has ever been taken to court over the legality of overdraft fines and other random, pointless fees - they always back down just before it gets to that stage. That kind of behaviour might suggest that they know full well the charges aren't legal so are just trying to string people along for as long as possible.

yeah i agree with the last post
it was on radio 4 a program called moneybox
ste off here has also mentioned it before then
however some banks have got in the habit of closing the accounts of people who they have paid back penalty charges to.

they know they are theiving but they dont want to have customers who will get them to pay back their ill-gotten gains

some people have claimed back thousands in charges by using bank statements as evidence

they are supposed to take a fee that cover there costs, and excessive administration fees which are effectively penalty charges are illegal

I believe the law says something along the lines of 'you may not profit from charges'

thing is winning victories against banks is good but has consequences , this group did the same as you and protested and went to court or something over unfair charges , they won but where politely asked for take their biz elsewhere.
