I have a spare hd from my dads other computer, it had all of his contacts and emails in outlook 2003 on the hard drive.

Is there an easy way to go onto the hard drive and get the emails. I.E are they stored in a special folder or do you have to physically open outlook and save them?

Same with the contacts. Might be a bit screwed if i can't get them. Laughing

They are stored in a file called a PST, which will be under the user names local data area.

Eg: C:\Documents and Settings\USER_NAME_HERE\Application Data\Microsoft\Office

You wont be able to browse to this location unless you have unhidden system protected filed and folders, as well as hidden files. It should be in there, somewhere, if not there, it will be in C:\Documents and Settings\USER_NAME_HERE\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook.

I cant remember if PST's are labelled as a Personal Folder File, or not, but thier extensions are PST. If you need to view the extensions, unhide known file extensions in the folder properties (which is where the option for unhiding sys files/folders and hidden files is).

You might not be able to actually view anything in the docs & settings folder, if you cant, post back and Ill tell you how to grab access-it means going into safe mode, and is a little long winded.

If you can view the docs & settings though, you can just simply import the files under the import functions of Outlook. It will include any schedule, todo, and notes that have been included in that instance of Outlook. I cant remember if it will import the actual email settings, if not, it shouldnt be too dificult to add them-using the usual add account tools included in Outlook.

Hope that jibberish helps! Thumbs Up

Outlook PST files and the exchange OST files are down as "Office data file" in windows explorer although outlook does indeed know them as personal folder file.

Never known for a pst/ost file to be under c:\docs and settings\username\application data, they should either be under localsettings\app data or have known some silly techies ( whom like to think they actually know a kettle lead from the power button Rolling Eyes ) move them to the root of c: so that they can share the whole of c: and back them up remotley, why they don't just give admin or a backup user their right to local settings\app data i'll never know...

Ergh, Opera... that's not been decent since about 2002 when it changed from being a 10 meg download with java and everything within one setup file, now it's a laggy crashing piece of shite (well was when i last grabbed it about 6 month ago)...

IE7 beta 3 preview FTW Smile Cool

Anyone leaving mission critical data or data files with security implications on client pc's, and not on a secure network location, is asking for trouble.

Giving one user specific access to the local settings app data folder is far less of a security issue then giving everyone access to the root of c: which was what i am talking about, most people who care for their emails will either regually backup their pst file manualy or should have it setup to store on server if using pop3 TBH mate Smile.

When I move back home Im planning to run ALL local settings from a central server, with a local copy on the client machine.

So, if I want to login to my account on my moms computer, say, I can do it simply and not have to change everything to suit me; and vice versa.

Leaving messages on server is a very good idea, apart form when it comes to reinstalling windows and downloading 5000 emails. Maxed out a new months bandwidth with that little trick once! Mad

Most general users in a corporate environment however know nothing of how email works, it just appears in front of them.
PST files stored on a home directory or equivalent is the only way to do it. You have 30 pc's all with user pst files on, they all need to left on while the backup runs and may require additional licencing for backup software to do desktop/laptops etc.

Not to mention the security implications of PC's being stolen with confidential information stored locally.
