I've been trying to find a helmet but how do I know what fits? On my lessons I was wearing a medium, but in the shop today I found that a large was probably more comfortable.

I was trying this specific helmet on, and it was the most comfortable I could find, reduced to £299.99, but is that too much? or not enough.
I know anything I buy should be adequate, but I'm not against paying more for something that's actually worth the money, I just don't want to be paying for fashion.

The person in the shop (it it's a good one) should be able to help fit the helmet to you.

It should feel slightly tight (but not painfully so as to cause headaches) while it is new but remember it will become more comfortable when it becomes worn in.
It should be fitted such that when the helmet is held steady you are not able to move your head left and right and up and down in the lid.
As for the money I think most people on here will agree it is important to find a helmet that fits rather that worry about cost(with the exception of really cheap naff helmets of course). I needed to buy a shoei lid at £300 to get a decent fit but I know people who have had to spend much more and much less.

More expensive lids I believe have extra benefits such as better vents etc..

DaveS pretty much summed it all up. I was also told that a new helemt should make your cheeks press onto your teeth at first.

When I was trying on helemts the only two that fitted well were a £110 KBC helmet and a £300 (ish) Shoei one. The KBC fitted slightly better so I went for that, purely on fit. It's a well made helmet and I certainly made the right choice.

Humm, I was thinking that, if the padding pads downs with wear it'd be better to go from something a little tighter.

Arai good brand , usually good fit , but if something fits better get that instead...

I've been seeing quite a few T-shirt and shorts folks on super sports wearing Arais , while leaving the rest of their bodies prone to road rash

I have a Shoe Raid 11. It fits me well enough on the head but the strap digs into my throat a bit. This makes me want to loosen the strap (but I don't).
So when you're trying them on do the strap up & see how it feels. Wink

Just buy the best that you can afford. If the assistant/s in the shop/s you visit don't give you advice or help on the matter then I suggest going somewhere else if possible. Afterall, it's your health and safety that you're paying for and you don't want that compromised.

Ive found that the blokes in HeinGericke are very good. I've actually had the manager of my local branch telling me the more expensive option is crap.

Was the case with glooves, wanted a pair for £129.99, he said that hes had 5+ pairs returned with knackered stitching after 3 months. And that he wouldnt touch them with a barge pole, saved me £50! Smile

See if there is one local, Linky

Same here. The KBC Force-RR helmet I have was £110 and I bought it because as soon as I put it on I could feel it snugly squeezing my face and not shifting about on my head at all. The only problem was the little "breath deflector" in the front just caught on my nose so I stripped that out.

I just bought Mrs. K. a 200 quid Shoei for when she's riding pillion. More expensive than mine it's true but you "Buy the one that fits, even if it's the 50 quid lid or the 500 quid one" as my instructor said to me.

My Shoei helmet does that too. I don't notice it when in town or on NSL roads but it does annoy me on the motorway. I find that the best thing to combat it is a neck warmer I got from Ride magazine a coupe of years ago which also helps to cut down wind noise a little.
