The film, not the vehicle. I watched this last night, and thought it would make a half decent review, as the latest from those genius' at Pixar.

For those who need reminding, Pixar came up with Toy Story, Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo, The Incredibles and A Bugs Life. All animated films, and all of them classics.
Cars, their latest, is a story revolving around Lightning McQueen, a rookie racing car on the American Speedway circuit. Throughout the film, cars take on human characteristics - it's only cars through the film, no humans.
The story takes off with Lightning on the race circuit - he's an arrogant, self-obsessed rookie racer who's going to the top of his game, but remains as always a very likeable character.
The animation is, now and forever, stunning. The motion and the emotion are absolutely first-class, and the portrayal of speed is seond-to-none, although it often relies heavily on some jaded camera angles. But then, this might be what makes the film:
The element of parody and homage is, as ever from Pixar, rampant. The social commentary is forever present and never stops, in the cars' attitudes and characters.
The story itself is, shall we say, classic. It's a very, very tired story, and relies heavily on all the old characteristics of films. But I think this is what makes the film. Pixar used the stereotypes of film and applied them to a completely unfamiliar and alien situation. They always have done, and that's what makes them such good kids films, and Cars is no exception.
The story revolves around Lightning's discovering what true happiness is, and his perception of life. Again, it's a very jaded story, but you can cast this aside as redundant because it's so different. As a car film the automotive jokes stay at an average level which is ultimately a good thing, as it doesn't detract from any character development and lets you get lost in their world.
The soundtrack for Cars is totally suited to the film, and in my opinion, absolutely fantastic. Definitely a feature of the film. Consisting majoratively of pop rock it really plays with the film and definitely brings the film together.
All in, Cars is not the best Pixar film ever made. Arguably, Pixar have gone from strength to strength, with each film being better than the last, although some die-hards will still say Toy Story was the best. In my opinion it has gotten better as time wears on, but I think they've broken their streak. After Finding Nemo and The Incredibles, Cars pales in comparison, unfortunately. That's not to say it isn't a brilliant film; it just isn't as good.
This is definitely worth a watch, especially if you go and see it with the kiddies - there's no doubt they'll love it. Despite it's lacking in performance compared to other Pixars, it's going to be the best one until the next Pixar comes out, so it's still the cream of the crop. |
