I think that it is "seratonine" spelling? released in the brain.

I used to in my youth run 6 miles or so, from Worthing Pier to Ferring and back again. I could sprint more at the end, than I could at the beginning.

These days, I am a bit fat, and I don't do impact areobics of any type, but I still row and swim a few times a week. Often I don't feel like it, and go to the gym in a pissy mood, but if I stick with it, and do some swimming, mentally I feel sooooooooooo much better afterwards. Thumbs Up

Feel good? Usual for me is arrive back at home, lay down on the floor feel dizzy and kind of black out with sweat dripping everywhere. After coming round a bit i get something to eat then spend the next 2 or 3 days coughing.

I started again last week running every other day. Absolutely hate it but when you can do a truffle shuffle it's time to do something about it.

Usually if I've had to run, it means I get to jump up and down on a foreign gentleman at the end of it, so sometimes a certain amount of satisfaction there.

Serotonin is also a by product of exercise and also is what creates 'happy feelings'! So in effect its a combination of endorphine release and serotonin that creates the 'feel good' factor.

I always feel as calm as a hindu cow after training Thumbs Up

Quote:
Is exercise an addiction? According to most research the answer is a resounding yes! Research suggests that those who pursue intense, high-endurance sports, such as running, cycling and swimming, exert intensive stress on their bodies. In response to this stress they produce addictive substances called Beta-endorphins.

Endorphins are hormones secreted by the pituitary gland in response to physical stress. These hormones are known to block pain, decrease appetite, decrease anxiety and induce feelings of euphoria.

Does this sound familiar? It should. Endorphins are chemically related to the drug morphine. Morphine is extremely addicting. Morphine is a drug that relieves pain and produces euphoric feelings. "Endorphin" actually means "endogenous morphine." Endorphins and morphine both bind to the same chemical receptors in the brain and produce similar responses.

A bit of food for thought!

Good trainers are a must, they will help protect your knees and feet from the hi impact nature of running. Out of everything, this is by far the most important tip.

Make sure your trainers are a good half size to big for your feet because your feet swell during a long distance run as the blood pumps through them. I have run long distances in ill fitting trainers and I ended up with an injury for a good few weeks.

I reckon these are the two most important tips.

As for actual training, start by running three mile three times a week. After a fortnight increase your distance by one mile. Repeat every fortnight and you should eventually reach your required distance.

Once you get up to distances like 8 miles I tend to do these maybe twice a week and do a shorter four miler on the other day.

Once you can achieve a say ten miles then you can alter your running schedule. I tend to do four miles, 5 the next day, 3.5 the day after then a ten miler on a friday night.

Measuring your routes (walkjogrun.co.uk) helps as you can time your miles given you an idea of how you are progressing.

Fartleking is a good technique to counter boredom and develop fitness whilst on a long run. Simply alternate you pace whilst running....i.e. I tend to sprint up hills (until I'm fucked) then slow down to recover, then pick up the pace to a regular speed. By alternating sprinting, slow jogging and steady pace you help strengthen your heart and lungs. Excellent method that is easy to incorporate.

With regards to food, plenty of fruit, veg, hi carbs items like pasta, rice and potatoes combined with a good protein source like chicken, beef etc. You really need to experiment with what you eat but bear in mind a ten mile run will use 1500 odd calories so you are freed up to eat as much as you want really.

Hi fat foods and hi protein diets tend to be harder for the body to break down to make energy, fruit and veg tend to produce an excellent source of energy but will not sustain you for a long time, whilst wholemeal products provide a longer energy release. You need to have a good mixture to make liong distances easier for yourself.

Hi sugar items can lead to a blood sugar level crash early on in the race, which can lead to you burning out and being sick but conversley a square of choclate during a run can give you a good energy boost!

A recovery drink (i.e. hi 5) after a long run is good to as you can feel fatigued for days after a long run since you have depleted your bodies stores of energy and nutrients.

So good trainers and good food and you should be grand.

Craigie b, good to see some informed answers on this board! Very informative.

I used to run all the time and be the best long distancer at school. I used to run 6minute miles for 6miles up and down a local cross country track with my dad. It seems to come natural this endurance lark, however if I was in a sprint unless you are 12 yrs old I can guarantee I would lose.

I ran the 2004 Grat North run at 17 and got a respectable time of 1hr 44. I was told by doctors not to do the run last year, and after having a foot absyss heal in the past 4 months I am back and running again. Need to sort out a decent plan and add some miles and times up over the next 3 months.

Now Craigie, heres one for you, should I see about getting a gait check on one of the special running machines? Or just purchase a normal running shoe? I would like to get a fair few miles on these shoes to make sure my feet are at home with them come October the 1st!

Also, what(if any) running forum do u use? As runnersworld.co.uk seems pretty shit.
