Yesterday, I followed the pink line from my auntie's house in Aberdeen back to mine in Bracknell.

Strangely, my bum didn't get sore til the last 50 miles. Smile

Why didn't you use the M6? Untill you get to Birmingham the M6 is a far quicker and more scenic route.

Cos I wanted to take my bike. I've flown plenty of times, the CBR doesn't fit into the overhead lockers.

Cos I wanted to go round the A1 coast road. I like the cement factory and the nuclear power station.

In other news, I dropped my bike in a petrol station in Stracathro while pushing it forward to lube the chain, but a nice lorry driver helped me pick it back up again.

I also discovered that you can get 8 pies, 4 butteries and 3 sticky buns in the underseat storage of a ZRX1100. This alone makes me want one.

And finally, a 120 mile round trip to Craigellachie to buy discounted shortbread may not make great financial sense, but was fun nonetheless.

I did Lincoln to Cromarty Firth area, that hurt, a lot. And same here, the last 50 miles tend to be the worst, felt like someone had put a knife between my shoulder blades!

And besides, the single carriageway bit once you drop off the A1 north of Newcastle is a lot better (more fun!) than slugging up (or down) the M6!

Edited to add: How long did it take you in total Bendy?

Yes we referr to my mates one as "the millenium falcon" and the underseat storage as "The docking port". A quite astounding amount of kit can be cached therein, including, as it turns out, all the utensils and ingredients needed to make a chicken jalfrezi with pilau rice from scratch (including all the herbs and spices, a board to chop them on and a cast iron frying pan to cook in).

I also preferr the A1 to the M6 on the bike.

Lots of Truvelo cameras which means a) they can't get you on a bike on account of being forward facing and b) The police don't bother setting up speed traps because it is already covered by the cameras.

There is also that place in a laybye just before the roundabout that does a damned good chilli burger.

I left Aberdeen at about half nine and got back to Bracknell at about half seven.

Since the weather was nice and I wasn't in any hurry, I took decent breaks when getting fuel or just cos I felt like it. Nice to sit on a clifftop right on the coast eating a pie in the sunshine.

As a consequence, I didn't feel as knackered as I usually do when driving it. I'd go as far as saying that at this time of year, the bike's a better way to get there, not significantly faster but more pleasant, the time being lost in breaks rather than sitting in jams or getting stuck behind tractors on the single lane bits (I usually go that route by car too, the coast road gives you something to look at after all the motorway miles).

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.
