Is there any law on how long people can take before charging you for something that you bought on a credit card?

The speeding fine I got in Norway has finally shown up on my credit card statement, one month after they gave me the fine. I'm pretty miffed as I thought I'd got away with it and they'd ripped it up. Bunch of wankers Thumbs Down Thumbs Down Thumbs Down

Hi,

He would still owe the money even if the card was cancelled so no point.

They have ages I think you are stuck with it.

Regards

If it's from a foreign country, they have even longer than ages!

I remember thinking the same thing once, looked it up and realised its ages, can't remember exactly how long.

It makes sense though, if you owed someone some money a month ago, then you owe them it today too.

I realise that you'd still owe them the money, Very Happy I was just thinking as a way of avoiding paying it. Seeing as its a foreign country etc, how likely they would pursue the outstanding charges?

I used to work for a credit card company and only found this out after somebody had complained about an item they bought and they didnt take the money for 2 months!

The way it works (or worked was a few years back now) is that when you buy or sign/chip and pin etc something you have entered an agreement with the person/company stating you will give them that amount of money. Its upto them when they take that but they have till the end of that year or financial year cant quite remember which.

Hope this helps?

Cheers, thought that would be the case. tried to cancel the card but was foiled by my dodgey mobile phone not wanting to work. would have been a stupid idea because the norwegian police could put a pretty convincing case to the credit card company that it really was me using the card, so reporting it stolen would have been a great way to kill my credit history and add credit card fraud to my criminal record.

just miffed because i thought they'd ripped up the ticket out of sympathy for me, then the bastard fine appears one month later! Evil or Very Mad

up in the north there is only one bloody road! and there are loads of sections on it with stupid speed limits. in typical fashion for the police of any country, they were hiding behind a bush! utter bastards the lot of them Neutral
