Power to lock topics - For sale section

I know it's been suggested before and I really do think it would be a good idea to implement such a function. Only to the for sale section.

I'm sick to the back teeth of people's comments put on people's advertisements. Being offensive or not. Even people making comments like "oh mate, you should really lower your price, you're not gonna get £xxxx for it". People who make such comments...does it not cross your mind once that the seller may already have an interested buyer? Your 'helpful' posts are actually not helpful in these circumstances. A pm would be much more 'useful' but you can't expect everyone to be this considerate.

Not asking for anything to happen over night, I jsut ask it to be considered.

One prime example - Itchy. Wtf is the point in posting that utter shit comment in 'Phantomtecks' post? Really? Are you really suich a spiteful <<insert what you like here>> that you want to ruin his chance of selling?

Same goes to anyone else putting such comments up. Not saying I haven't done it in the past, no-one is perfect after all, it just needs something done about it.

Yay or nay, what say you...(blimmin' section doesn't allow poll's...get onto that too whilst yer at it big chap.....)

I say yeah, for example Jay123455025824's post was moved to fights and flame wars when all he was trying to do was sell a bike. If people have none constructive opinions they should keep them to themselves, or they may ruin the other person's chance of a quick or easy sale.

It has been asked before and I think it will be quite a good feature to have, if indeed it is possible.

A "for sale" board shouldn't have the facility on it to reply to the adverts for everybody to see.

After taking a look at the sort of replies that most threads in there get, I tend to agree - unfortunately.

To that end I've disabled replies in the two Exchange & Mart sections. Interested parties can and should PM the advertiser directly...

How about letting the original poster add further posts, but no-one else? That way they can update information or the situation. I know they could edit the original post, but there'd be no way of anyone knowing there was a change in information or extra information. They could alter the subject I guess, but it wouldn't bump the post.

But what about n00bs who are warned off a potential death trap or dodgy item by more experienced members?

a good example: colin's interest in a certain DR350 of questionable background.

It's a forum and so people should expect replies. It's a supplementary way of selling your bike in conjunction with biketrader, ebay etc

I agree with the random ''If I had the cash mate I'd 'av it straight off yer mate!'' posts, they should probably be deleted by Mods


Preventing potential buyers publically asking their questions leaves the seller free to tell their own story via PM. This wil result in x10 the amount of complaints of people being ripped off/buying Lemons because everyone else is only aware of what the seller wants them to know.

I've always liked the way you can reply. I know it can be abused, but with a little moderating, it shouldn't get too bad. It helps to filter out things that people should be avoiding, kind of adds a community feel.

I also notice that alot of replies are quite helpful.

I could see us ending up with alot more posts like the one there now, has a link to ebay and is all badly written. In the past people would take the piss if someone had the topic name "Sumink Naked Wanted..." then the post all in caps.

Overall though it's probably best to not allow replies, it's a shame though.

If people are really interested in a advertisement, they can post up in general bike chat with a url to the item, asking for opinions.

I see your point about buyers being stupid but hey, sometimes you just have to learn. If the buyer has a sensible head on them, they can find out info via the way I've mentioned.

Wouldn't it be easier to just be able to post the advert then the topic is automaticly locked then if you are genuinely interested you can then PM the Seller.....

Works on other Forums I'm on.....

You can always view all the sellers posts and search the forums too to find out if there have been any problems with the bike you are interested in

If peeps are seen to be CONTINUALLY posting CRAP on peoples ads then warn them, then ban them

Biggest form of OVER DOING IT i have ever seen, and as the user of 5 forums, never seen owt like it before .

I agree that they shouldn't be locked.
Get in place the rules for the two sections then if someone continues to abuse those rules then be sanctioned for it.

We get enough people casuing problems with not reading the few rules there are.

In the past I have wondered about having the for-sale ads as a seperate section, maybe with some 'attributes'; ie manufacturer, model etc; then having a 'link' to a 'comments' thread.

Of course, rather a lot of work and hassle.

Seems like using a sledge hammer to crack walnuts. All it would have taken is some effective moderating.

It only helps the rip off merchants imo. If someone is selling a nice bike with no hidden gremlins at a sensible price then there isn't much anyone can say bad about it.

There are one or two bikes (mentioning no names) that i might have been interested in from reading the first post but wouldn't have touched with a bargepole by the end of the thread once all the hidden dirt, deliberately witheld by the seller had been revealed.
