Yep Royal Enfield is it That's just me mixing the two up. I'll try and get more details about it when I see him later this week.
He was joking about taking my bike up and down the road when I was last there. Obviously brought back memories for him.
There should be a way of looking up a bike by all sorts of details, eg previous owner, reg, engine/frame numbers etc. Just so people can see what's happening with a bike they used to own or want to find. There must be records of all those details out there already.
How far back do vehicle records go? Did people have to register vehicles in just the same way 50 years ago?
On a side note, does anyone have an old bike like a Royal Enfield? Or any other British bike? I've not got alot to spend but I'd like a project/restoration bike and they one of them would be great.

Hmm...
I'm not sure how far back records go.
Your best bet is to ask him what did he have to do when he had the bike. Like, was there a DVLA back then of some sort. If so, try finding there phone number and asking about there records. It's worth a try.
I'm not quite sure about British bikes. I know that a lot are down to the last few hundred in the world so getting an old one might be a bit tricky because people that do own them have the same interest as you do and aren't usually willing to part with them, but, when they do, they are usually swooped up by a collector. Plus, most of the time, they have already been restored.
I found a like about old bike for sale that have been restored. I don't know if it will be of any use, but, you could contact them and explain your situation and interest and they might be able to point you in the right direction.

Best place to start would be the Royal Enfield Owner's Club :-
