I'm 25, 6Ft 1 and about 16stone (and falling [v.slowly]). I 'm at uni at the moment and things are tight. I really want to get onto a bike asap.

I know the ideal would be to get a decent a bigger bike and restrict it etc, but 've seen lot's of advice about getting a 125 and selling it on at a very small loss a few months down the line.

My question is, how quick, big and credible is a reasonably cheap 125 crosser? Am I going to look a bit of a tool on one and considered being too big/old for that route? If not what are the better bikes to look out for?

I'm 24, 25 in september, and I plan on getting a 125 when i can afford it. You are certainly not too old. I guess you just need a few guys on here to tell you what the largest 125s are so you don't look out of place on some tiny bike.

That's what I'm hoping for.

I've read loads about the sv650s and similar, being the best way for a new rider, but it's just not affordable at the moment.

I just want something cheap I'm not going to lose too much money on, but that's still got some credibility.

FWIW if you want a more all rounder type of bike to practice on then if you can find one at the right price the Honda XL125V Varadero might suit you better than a crosser. Taller than most 125s.

Get the 125. Life is short, and 18 months is a long time to wait. And don't worry about what you look like on a bike, get one that is comfortable for you. I knew a bloke who was 6'4", 25st and made a CBR600 look like a moped, but he loved the bike.

I'm guessing that those voting for you to wait are more image concious than those voting for you to get a bike now.

plus if you get abike now, you will have had 18month road experience on a bike, which should make doing your A2 or DAS a lot easier.

I'm 6'1" and just under 16 stone. I am going to be riding a Honda H100 to a rally about 80 miles away this evening (an H100 is a tiny little bike). I do have to stick my leg out if I'm doing a tight turn or the handlebar catches on my knee though.

I also used to commute to college on a 1968 stepthrough moped (with pedals).

My mate Chris is 6'7" and rides to work every day on a Honda C90.

So I wouldn't worry about the size of the bike unduly.

I like the look of those new MZ 125s.

I'm around the same size (bit shorter, bit heavier) and things like newish DT125's feel far from small.

Do consider that living in an area full of students theres a higher chance of it going walkies. So the Varadero might be a better choice. They tend to be less interested in that type of bike.

Shorter than most proper off road styled bikes, also less power and quite a lot more weight (ie not much less than that sv650).
Also way, way over priced in my opinion.

A 'proper' 125 trail style bike is reasonably big and you won't look stupid on one.

Didn't Dean (Demonic69) ride an NSR125 for a while... he was about 6ft something and MASSIVE?

I was going to suggest the Varado, I have seen a Chinese copy that one of the electricians has here, I can't remember what it was but it looks a whole lot bigger than a 125 and is a decent hunk of bike.

Get an Aprilia Pegaso 125 if you can find one Razz

Got the same frame as the 650 version ... So a big and bulky bike ...

Luke.

Im 6'2, and my KMX200 didn't feel big at all. I can touch the floor with both feet almost flat, and it feels like a very small, light and easy to manoeuvre bike, so you won't have a problem with one. If your 6'4 i would try to find a DT125R as the seat height is 25mm taller than the KMX, or a TS125R as these has the highest seat of any 125cc trail bikes! The Honda XLR125 might be a good bike to look out for too!
