Hello,

One of the more annoying, yet surprisingly regular things on my daily commute is people leaving their indicators on. From nice Mr Punto who indicates left, comes up to a junction, slows down slightly, tucks in left and then... carries on going straight and swerves back out (I'd positioned myself to overtake at this point and was nearly next to him Mad ) to Mr GSXR who rides along with his indicator on (which cracks me up). The question is: how do you let someone know they've left their indicator on?

I tried pointing at their indicator, indicating briefly myself (when it was safe to do so), waving, more pointing and gesticulating and generally making an ass off myself; the amount of effort put into it seems to have no bearing on the likelyhood of getting noticed, though.

A quick search threw up this old thread, which seems worth trying, but do any of you know of another way that generally works?

I belive the sign for indicators is opening ure hand fully then closing it with ure fingers stretched out as if to make some kind of 'you talk too much' gesture... atleast i think it is? ride up close and point at the damn indicator or ride infront and put it on until he thinks ure daft when theres no turn therefore checking his own :S

If all else fails just stay well back and overtake on a stright Smile

The flashy hand gesture is the most common.

The other thing to try is once you are in front of them put your indicators on in turn, then turn them off. Do it again if they haven't noticed. It's sometimes enough to make them check their own.

Lesson - Never trust anyone on the road.

It's one of the things I remember my instructor saying

"What does it mean if you can see someone indicating?"
"They want to turn?"
"Nope. It means the bulbs working. Never assume it means anything more"

Laughing VERY true, I will so have to remember that one

my instructors best line was, 'lets face it to be a biker you have to be at least a bit mad'

Learned the same thing, so I generally ignore indicators and pay more attention to how they're driving. On roundabouts, for example, you can tell if someone is about to leave because they'll accelerate. Similar rules of thumb apply for many other situations. None the less, it's irritating and distracting, especially for the first one or two junctions when you're still not quite sure whether they actually intend to turn and step on the brakes any minute or just left it on and carry on going.

Big following distance is the only real solution, but that can invite numb-nuts to do silly overtakes in commuting traffic, so it's a somewhere between a rock and a hard place Smile.

shame bikes arent like cars and make a noise..

the bike i was on today ( dont know if same for most/all bikes ) after you selected what way.. it will slide back into position in the middle, and you need to press it in to cancle your signal

Throw rocks at them, until they get the point. Or they'll try to indicate to turn off at the next road to get away from you in which case they'll be using the indicator correctly.
