I was over at my friends flat earlier this evening, and through the window i hear a 'blip-bleep', which i recognised as my alarms 'leave me alone or i`m going to go off' warning sound, normally this is caused by wind, or because it just feels like expressing itself randomly.

So i put on my boots and go downstairs and out of the back door, pressing the alarm fob to reset the alarm. As i round the corner i see a white van, with its doors wide open, and two guys in fluorescent vests walking away from my bike (which had somehow moved 10 feet, and changed angle) i hear a "shit, get in the van!" from the driver, and the two guys dive in the back as the van screeches off.

Cheers

Now, i`d always hoped in this situation that i would immediately be switched on and alert, but as it happens, it took me about 10 seconds to even realise what had happened, and i didnt even think to look at the number plate! (doh) as for descriptions of the guys, pah! My brain has let me down, no point in reporting to the police that a van (of which i dont know the reg, or even the first letter of the reg) and 3 guys (who were wearing clothes) had just tried to nick my bike (and failed)

Nevermind eh, at least i know never to ride there again, i`ll use my Vauxhall Nova next time, they are welcome to it lol

shit man that's mental.
just think, if you'd reset the alarm from the flat you'd have lost the bike Shocked
can understand the feeling of shock before you contemplate what's actually going on.

People in flourescent jackets are often officials. Look official and look like you should be doing whatever it is you're up to and people will often ignore you. Sounds a damn sight more sensible to me than wearing a stocking on your head and trying to pick up a bike with no one noticing you...

Glad you got there in time to scare them off Thumbs Up

My father in law once see a group of chavs near his car, went down to investigate and see the car start to drive away. He grabbed a brick, threw it and smashed the rear window. They stopped and said 'WTF?', to which he replied 'thats my fucking car!'. Never seen a chav run so quick Laughing

  /           \
quality--- weight

I'm glad that they didn't get your bike, there seems to be a lot of this going on at the moment.

I am intrigued though about this alarm of yours. I find it kind of funny that it gives out a blip-bleep that means leave me alone or i'm going to go off. Surely if someone is tampering with it then it might as well just sound the alarm fully rather than give them a warning that it could go off?

If your bike moved around 10ft then did the main alarm sound as well as the warning eventually?

It's like that with the modern datatool alarms. It gives you a warning and if you keep moving it then it'll full on go off.

FWIW I would report it.
There may have been other incidents and the fact that they look like workmen in the day-glo vests might mean something.

Put it this way, if you found out after your bike was nicked that 3 guys had been seen attempting to nick a bike but the owner did nothing how more pissed off would you be?

Just my thoughts Thumbs Up

Glad the alarm worked, lesson for us all there not to ignore such things.

For a good lock (well not exactly a chain of the such but it does the same job)

Look for an oxford revolver (or one by another brand that is cheaper...loads of companies make the revolver locks now).

They are almost impossible to get into, the locks just swivel if you try and pick them, if you try and saw through the chain part then it just swivels around, same goes for grinding. The only way someone would have any luck in getting through one would to have some seriously big ass cutters or a hefty hammer and a chisel (which isn't likely and you would hear it)

Oxford one is about £35-£40 or something but i have seen almost identical (just different colours) ones for about £25 which would do the job fine.

I have mine in a pannier, really quite light. I don't even notice its there.

Another option would be to get a disc lock (i have both, if i'm going to use 1 of the locks, i put the other on aswell). My disc lock actually cost more than my oxford revolver but it is thatcham approved and brought my excess down from £800 (not garaged) or £400 (garaged) to either £200 or £300...not bad hey Razz

The lock did cost a few pence over £40 but if you see it, you'll realise it will take some getting through (ill try and find a piccy) and it also has an 'anti-pick lock'.

Like someone previously said, you won't get quality without spending money, you could spend £10 on a chain and lock but a mouse could chew through it, or you could spend £100 on a lock and people would walk away when they saw it.

That is similar to mine, but mines made by 'bulldog' or something dodgey like that, i'll find out in a minute.

Good job you heard the beep from the alarm but I'm pretty sure those guys weren't pro bike thieves. If it isn't chained up then usually the bike gets lifted up with scaffold poles through the wheels and into the van before the alarm has a chance to react. If they were pro's then you would be bikeless at the mo.

If I was you I'd invest in a good chain (please don't rely on Oxford etc to provide good chains - they are cheap tat from China) and leave the bike chained to something solid. The problem with lightweight chains is that they are usually weak, mind you could you not get a hefty chain from Almax or something to leave at home?

Anyway, I do think it's worth reporting to the police. Even if just to give them the message thieves are around at the mo etc. Maybe a patrol car could keep an eye out etc.

Glad your bike's still with you though Thumbs Up

Thanks for the advice people,

Having given it some thought i think you are right, i`m going to ring the crime number now and give a statement, i havent got much information to give to them but then again it cant hurt, and if someone else were to lose their bike in teh same manner i would be feeling pretty damn guilty.

Some locks come with a little bag that can be put on the pillion seat/back rack - means that if you come off you're less likely to have to have a surgeon remove it from your body Confused.

& id say the high-vis jackets is a more stealthier way of doing it(as mad as thats sounds)

& was i wheeled away or lifted? is it liftable with 2? cause a disk lock is good for this
