I've been fiddling with my suspension settings for months and months and i thought i'd found a setup i liked but on Sunday, when on a steady ride with a mate and the missus a couple of bikes flew past looking like they'd be good fun to chase and play with.

I caught them, only because they kept their speed to 90mph on the straight bits, and proceeded to follow them through the twisties. They were really flying through the corners, dragging knees on many of them, and i really dtruggled to stay with them. At that pace my bike felt vague and was sliding and i wasn't able to hold the lines they were using.

My mate also has a ZX10R and claims that he has achieved the optimum setup and as he weighs exactly the same as i do i asked him if wouldn't mind taking my bike out for a spin and letting me know his thoughts.

He agreed and offered me a ride on his, this is unpresedented as no-one ever rides his bikes, so i gladly agreed. His bike did indeed handle bueatifully and i was even more intrigued as to what he would say about mine!

We rode together for about ten miles and i could see him testing the front with some very heavy braking and testing the rear with some hard acceleration out of corners and my bike did look to be moving around somewhat where his was sublimely stable under me.

When we arrived back he simply said "what have you done to it, its horrendous! It just wants to go straight all the time and you have to man handle it through every bend!" Embarassed

i just shrugged my shoulders and said "i tried to set it up, i guess i'm not very good at it", he then said "hats off to you for being able to ride it anything faster than a crawl" which i took to being a compliment.

Anyway, he made some changes to the suspension and the bike felt a lot better. Me and the missus rode back to her parents to drop her bike off because it had a problem and her dad is a bike mechanic and i gave her a lift home on my bike.

Heres the lucky discovery, with her on the back my bike felt as good as my mates ZX10R!!! handled bueatifully and perfectly stable. I weigh 10.5 stone and she ways 8.5 stone, which means my bike is setup for a 19 stone rider!! So all i need to do now is adjust my rear preload and sorted!!!!

Can't wait to get my baby handling properly Dance!

Haha or tune it Wink

The missus had a go on my bike for the first time Wednesday night, we swapped so i could see what the problem was with hers and now she wants one a new bike Razz

Her G reg FZR is not in the best condition and the suspension is knackered making it a very bouncy ride. Its the only bike shes ridden though and was too scared to ride mine even though i've offered many times, now that she has theres going to be no stopping her blowing all our money on something new and shiney for her Brick Wall

MCN published settings for the ZX10R - I'm afraid I'm having no luck finding them online but I believe they were widely thought of as the perfect settings for each factored rider weight Thumbs Up

You do expect grief for publishing that information don't you.

In my experience it's unwise to tell anyone a woman's weight or measurements Wink Razz

I've heard about these settings and have spoken to someone who has tried them and they said that even those were two firm for the Lincolnshire roads.

Just about every published setup i've seen and tried are way to harsh for road use.

Eventually i will get a different shock sprung for my weight and the forks sorted out too, just can't afford it at the moment

Might be a bit of a trek for you mate, but I read a thread over here that might be of some help. I'm considering it myself but the Blade's doing ok now and I'm a bit loathed to upset it.

I hear that there's some good deals to be had on ZX6R's, perhaps you could persuade the Mrs to go over to the green side. Wink

Its a 2005 model, thanks for the offer, i may take you up on the offer if the settings i'm going to try this weekend don't work.

I'm basically going to try the same settings my mate is running. His settings felt really good on his bike (exactly the same model as mine), so i'm hoping they will feel similar on mine

Hmm interesting, thanks for the heads up.

If your blades feels fine don't touch the suspenders, you may regret it and never get the feeling back again.

The missus is trying to decide between ZXR400 and a ZX6R at the moment. It really boils down to how much debt shes prepared to take on. But i'll try and get her some test rides soon and see which one she likes the most.

If we can fix the FZR for under £100 i reckon she should keep that for a bit longer though

That is extremely close to what i'm running now, the only difference being the rear preload and my forks have been pushed through the yokes by 3mm.

The damping settings front and rear are identical and all i was going to do this weekend was to sort out the rear preload, my runs 34mm of rider sag, and i currently have 24mm.

Top find Feef!! Thumbs Up
