In several places, I've seen two cables run across the road about 2 feet apart. On one side, they're just cut off so they're not power leads, on the other they disappear into the side of the road. I thought they might be speed camera triggers or similar, but the positioning of several of them doesn't make sense in that regard. Does anyone know what these are for? (Vehicle counters?)

Some are just for monitoring how much traffic uses the road. Some record rough speeds, probably as research for whether it is feasable location for a speed camera.

But i read somewhere that some can actually trigger a speed camera. I think it's the 3 strip ones you need to watch out for.

If there are two rubber bits of tubing going accross the road and someone standing on the pavement with a clipboard looking official then there just checking the traffic flow. I think it's just done in busy areas. Nothing to worry about.

Often you see them with a grey box chained to a lamppost at one end. I saw one on the entrance to a car park for some council controlled lakes.

I always assumed they were for counting purpose's only. I expect they need two to tell what direction your travelling in.

It it were for speed purposes - then i would think that the gap between the cables was too narrow to get an speed reading.

The gap between the two should be fine for speed, I would have thought.

Whatever, I try and go over them under the speed limit, so if it is measuring speed the average is lowered a bit.

Seen as it doesn't measure speed from the amount of rotations the wheels take over the line (Seen as it can't) it wouldn't do alot.

I believe they measure how fast you are going by the time it takes for you to cross both of the lines, using Speed = Distance / Time as the way to record it.
