my dad has two bikes, the first being an old bsa and the second being a suzuki intruder 800. he wants to get rid of the 800 because he never uses it (N reg and its done just under 8000 miles) and its a really nice bike. im still on L plates but i was thinking, how crazy would it be for me to sell my current bike and my old moped to fund my test, then convince my dad to give me his bike for free?....it seemed a good idea but then i thought hang on, 800 cc at 17?....the question is will this thing kill me on insurance, i would have thought it would have been lower than the poncy sports bikes ( no offence i just dont like them).

Nope, I got a quote on an 850cc bike at 17 for £416, just to prove that cc doesn't matter as much as most other factors.

find the insurance group, the divvy is a 600 and i will pay under 400 with 2yrsncb- its group 8, the z750 is group 12 and will cost me double that, and its only 150cc difference.
A cruiser could be suprisingly low

he wont let me near his bsa let alone clean it for him, its his pride and joy and slow as hell, the brakes are crap and the lights are awful, but theres something about it that new bikes just dont have and i get why he loves it so much.

The 800 'intruder' has less power than a sports 400, a lot more weight and a lot less 'handling' ability - so unlikely you'll be going fast, just don't try and keep up with other, faster, bikes .

Basically, only silly because it's a rather sillely slow bike .

My dislike of cruisers is well documented! - And there was a point to my rantings, that at 17 it should be relatively less of a bad idea than your average 17 year old getting a sports 400, providing you're sensible, of course.

Incidentally, from my limited experience of curisers, you need a fair bit less gearbox work from a similar size sportsy bike to keep the same speed.

i know all bikescan and will be stolen, but i do find some comfort that my dads bike (hopefully mine) weighs 200lbs and i should imagine is near imposible to lift into the back of a transit van

Tail bikes for the chavs and pikey's, sports bikes for hardcore or pro scum.

'Casual thieves' will tend to go for 50/125 and trail bikes - ones they can easily rag around a field.
I expect your average pikey/chav type has some idea that a 180mph sports bike will probably kill them.

More profesional thieves will go for what ever is wanted.

Afraid 200kg would be very easily done with four blokes - probably two if they were happy to take a bit longer.
The ramp managed to jumpy away earlier*, ok my SV isn't the heaviest of bikes, but I was ok lifting the back end up and in while myself. Have put a 125 into a highish van on my own in the past without a ramp.

*Don't ride up a ramp sitting on a bike, then stop halfway and try and go again, a bad idea.

sorry i dont know if anybody will know this but say worst came to the worst and i had to put my hand into my pocket for the bike how much is it worth (bear in mind he WILL knock money off for family), its an n reg, good condition not showroom but great for a biek of its age, 8000 miles on the clock and in metalic black

my dads as tight as a ducks arse so if he already has the bike then he hasnt got to spend anymore money on my bday present.

for example when i was a kid there was this little motorbike going for 100 quid, it wasnt much, but i set my heart on it, so he haggled but the bloke wasnt going any lower, later that day he said ''i would have brought it you if he had gone down to 90 quid''
