Hello all.

I've got my final lesson Saturday, big test the week after that. All going well I'll have about £2,000 to spend on a bike.

Looking through biketrader and mcn, mid-late 90's zx6rs and zx7rs appear to be a similar price, and if anything the zx7rs seem to be more numerous at cheaper prices. Why so? Is it because of the higher insurance? Is the zx7r that much more powerfull? Would the zx6r be better for a first bike?

Will an insurance company crucify me (0 years experience, 0 years no claims) on a zx7r over a zx6r?

Al

The ZX7R is a lot of bike for a first time bike after passing your test, they can be a bit unforgiving to the inexperienced rider, so i would recommend a ZX6R.

Theres a multitude of reasons why there are a lot for sale at the moment. A lot of inexperienced riders are snapping up the 600's, a lot of people are upgrading from 750's to 1000's etc etc

and i would say that insurance will be fairly expensive, not sure aboout crucifying, but expensive

ZX6R is softer on insurance and easier to ride for a beginner.

I would have thought a ZX6 G model and above, at least, would be in general faster than a zx7 in your average riders hands.
Thus the ZX7R is relatively quite cheap.

For an experienced rider, ZX7R is awesome on the road. Steering lock is a bit lame, but other than the weight when you are doing tight maneuvers, i cant fault it.

I love it

Im 22, live in london and pay £420 TPFT Carole Nash for my Green Zx7r P5

But if you only just passed your test, get summat like a 400, nice and slow and soft, excellent to learn how to ride. Had a CBR400, it was quality

BTW, check this no reserve zx7r on ebay

I've got one of the newer ZX-6R's at the moment and they're a nice bike. I have'nt really ridden one of the old ones so can't comment on them too much but from what I've heard they're a lot harder on the suspension.

Thing is I don't know if I'd recommend one as a first bike. Its not that you'll crash the thing or any shit like that, but with mine at the moment my riding skill (or lack of it Razz ) doesn't match what the bike is capable of and therefore I don't feel that I get 100% of it when I ride it.

If I had the choice after the test now I'd sooner go for a middleweight streetbike (i.e bandit 600 etc along those sought of lines) as I think I'd get a lot more feedback from it.

Not putting you off mate, just something to think about.

Feedback is very subjective, but I doubt you'd get more from something like a bandit - well unless you mean because you reach the limits much quicker and can feel that it's not happy much sooner*.

I would say it's maybe a case of learning to understand what the bike is 'saying', though I appreciate it may not be saying much bad "everything's ok" as such.

*which can be a good thing sometimes.

I'd opt for a 6R, but mainly because I prefer my bikes with a sub 200kg dry weight, as well as physically smaller ergonomics.

i think the insurance will be about the same because there in the same insurance group (i think), i cant see it been much worse to ride from a zx6 either apart from the size/weight (especially when moving slow)

Ant they are completely different to ride, mainly due to the weight and the size, there are pros and cons to both bikes.

The 7R can be a bit cumbersome at low speeds and requires a planning ahead regarding lines through corners and requires a lot of committed riding to ride fast. Once your used to riding like that the 7R can be ridden as fast as any other bike and arguably makes you a better rider (it has in my case).

The 6R is more rider friendly, easier to ride and more maneuverable at low speeds and it allows easier line changes when already committed to a chosen line in a corner.

..coinicidence but I am selling a nice J model for £2500 ono (check link in sig)

I was 20 when I insured the bike and pay £401 tpft with 1 years no claims.

Thanks for the replies everybody, usefull stuff. If I go for a ZX6R (G or J model) and decide to buy one, is there anything specific I should look at carefully on the bike before I part with my cash?

By the way, where are you based in the UK Dodsi? I haven't passed my test or got enough wonga just yet but your bike looks the biz mate Very Happy

Im oop norf'

But can delivar the bike...

Wink its a damn fine machine.

What to look for is...

warped discs, flaking wheel paint, corroded badly maintained shocks (can go baggy), any rattles/knocks from engine, genral cleanliness (says a lot about how the bike is kept internally aswell).

Everyone I've had has been sound, quick and got bargains with them all. Will keep with the best of the new crotch rockets even being 7 years old....

Click on my sig and see for yourself, my lastest one came with a shed load of brake, suspension and performance mods for a very cheap price.

Count me in for a 'G' too. Was my step from a gpx 250 and have had it near 3 months and am still happy as shit.
Although was always the bike I'd had my eye on, so why wouldn't I be?

As said it can keep up with the new kit and I've even seen a site somewhere around here and it appears according the them that the 0-100km/h times (3.1secs) are at times quicker than new stuff.
Must say I was quite happy when I spotted that.

Granted I ain't anywhere near getting that sort of times out of it but has plenty of play when I want it to and can be ridden calmly when needed.

Sorry but can't offer advice on the 7. Had the choice to pick one up for the same price when I got mine but looks wise there was no competition for me.

Have fun and be careful whatever your decision

ok maybe I'm biased but, dodsi, that is one nice bike, was looking at a silver one as I didn't want the sicky green.
I ended up with a J2 rather than J1 what the difference is I still don't know !

This is just personal pref but looks wise I think the 7 looks dated and a bit pants.
Ride wise I can only talk for my ZX6 but as a first bike after DAS it's easy to ride, nice on corners, feels so much better than my nsr as this feels like it's glued to the road and have a lot of confidence in it doing what it's supposed to.
There is no manic power band on it so you don't have to worry as much about what gear you in and at what revs.

Only point I'd make is the throttle is very on off, when you going it's fine but stop start or low speed on off it takes quite a lot of getting used to. (maybe there is a fix for this but not found one yet)

I paid 2600 for an 02 reg 5K miles, near mint condition and given what else I could buy for the same cash I'm well sold on the ZX6.

Ian

btw dodsi you add does not say what year your bike is !

The Title says "2000" (Its a 2000' W reg J1)

The differance between the J1 and J2 is purely paint jobs.

J1 and J2 is paint jobs, Confused really how bizarre never would have guessed that, what a weird thing to base a model on.
