Forcing neighbour to have work done on house?

The gutter on the back of my house needs replacing at its started to rot & it has moved from its mounting points so now the rain from the roof just pours down the gap between the gutter and wall. Thing is its just just mine, the next door neighbours is worse and has also come away. I'm not sure if ours has moved and taked his or the other way round, but either way they both need replacing.
I've spoken to the neighbour about it a couple of times and he agrees it needs doing, but moans that he's skint and does nothing.
I doubt i can just have mine done, as its pointless putting a new section up and joining it to a knackered section. Does anyone know how I can get him to have his replaced at the same time?
sensible suggestions please, threatening to twat him one wont get us very far!

IF he has building insurance, I *think* he is obliged to keep the house well maintained. Leaking guttering can lead to damp and you don't want that.

I personally would replace my guttering and where it should join with his, put an end cap on it.

If he cant be assed, f**k him. But also point out that once you have done the work, if your house is affected by his leaky guttering you will be in touch with your insurance compnay to claim back damages off of him.

When replacing yours with PVC gutter, you should be able to make a watertight seal to his. I would take a few before and after pics in case he trys to say you have damaged his property though.

Cant use pvc guttering. I'm in the middle of a row of 1870's terraced houses. Have to put up what everyone else has. Wooden ones. Cant cap the end of mine either as the water has to flow down to the end of the row before it goes down the drainpipe.

In which case, dig out your building docs, scan the small print for the part where is says about upkeep and maintenance. Show this to the neighbour, as he will have the same.

1870's buildings... Is it listed, or unders a preservation order? If so, get the local council involved, they should be able to do something with some local byelaw.
