discussion in work, can a car driver take a pillion on a moped?
The license group authorises moped riding without "L" plates, but does that mean he can take passengers too?

No.

A car driver may ride a moped as long as they have completed the CBT, but must ride with L plates.

No learner riders may carry pillions

No he/she will have full moped entitlement.

If he passed his car test before Feb 2001 he doesn't need to take a CBT.

If he passed afterwards he needs to do a CBT (check photo licence for code 122), which will then grant him FULL entitlement for the life of his car licence.

If they are arguing about whether they can take a pillion chances are that they did'nt pass the car test before 1991 Wink

i undestood that a car driver has full moped licence entitlement that means no L plates are needed and you can carry a passenger as well. I phoned the DVLA and they confirmed it.
i passed my car test in 1988 if that makes a difference?

https://www.dvla.gov.uk/drivers/learn2dr.htm#6.Drivingtests

Quote:
Full car licence holders riding mopeds
From 1 February 2001, a person passing a car driving test will be required to undertake a moped riding course before they can ride a moped on the road. A code number 122 is printed on the driving licence. This is only valid after a driver has successfully completed a basic moped training course.

Persons who already hold a full car licence, or who passed a car test before 1 February 2001, are not required to take training before riding a moped. But they are encouraged to do so.

If you passed in 1988, you can ride a moped with no L plates - and carry pillions.

But if we're following the law to the letter your moped also has to be restricted to 30mph. Laughing Laughing Rolling Eyes

all seems to agree with my thoughts on the subject.
Those of us with older licences (30+years) are ok, whilst newer drivers aren't.

Anyone can with a car licence!

Just those who passed after Feb. 2001 need to do a CBT first.

Which is bloody stupid all round. Just cos you can drive a car does not mean that your qualified to ride a moped what ever age you are or when you passed your test.
It also explains why so many hapless prats are riding around without plates.
Mind you they did the same thing many years ago, when people who drove prior to the car tests coming in were still allowed to drive without taking one at all.
Whats that Granny, never taken a test, the fact that you can manouvre an austin A40 means you can drive anything.

they stand out a mile in london

all these business men, with nothing more than an open face for protection, often with the strap not done up, riding to work like an idiot in and out of traffic, and not a whiff of a 'lifesaver' anywhere

it really irks, especially when they buy these so called fashionable modern vespa jamie oliver like scooters, and think they are the shiznit

ok,, I'm reading this as you still need to have L plates, you just dont have to take a CBT. thats the only difference,
As you may be entitled to ride a 50 without the CBT yet you still dont have motorbikes as a catagory of full licence.

also to quote goose I agree, CBT's should be made compulsory because of the so called "grandad Rights" having all the born agains or just plain muppet commuters on scooters killing emselfs off hiking our premiums up because of it.

There is often a weight issue with two people on a 50cc. They often exceed the safe load of the vehicle and tyres.

well one fat person could be the same as two small ppl, so two small ppl might be sort of ok on weight grounds

two fat ppl and i think pulling away wd be tricky and it might roll back down hills rather than go up them
