GPZ500S '89 Crackly Sound at Low Rpm

Below about 4k rpm mostly when setting off and using the clutch, there's an odd kind of crackling rattling sound which sounds like it's coming from the left hand side of the engine. At high engine speeds it isn't there.

Is this likely to be an output shaft bearing or similar, is it a engine fatality just waiting to happen, or has anyone got any bright ideas?

err, now are those engines not notorious for dropping the magnets out of their generators? I'd stop using it.
