My exhaust seems to have a large irreparable hole in it, iv got a master welder trying to fix it, the pipes themselves are in good condition so i was hoping to get a cheap exhaust can and slip it on, would cans off bigger bikes such as the Bandit 600 be ok or would i have to get a GS specific exhaust?
any help would be appreciated as im not overly confident about my current exhaust coming back usable....

It would almost certainly 'work', but it is going to take a lot of setting up to work properly, and you may never get it to run right all the way through the rev range.

A can from a 600 will probably flow enough gas, so that won't be a problem.

problem 1 will be the physical fit. Whether you could actuallt connect it to your pipes. Then you would need to make up a mounting bracket.

problem 2 will be the carburation. The new can will affect the back pressure, and will probably mess things up some. New jets or some fiddling with the needles will be required. Expect some fiddling to get it to run well and be prepared for compromises!

Personally, I would wait and see if they can fix it, and if they can't start phoning the breakers for a servicable replacement.

I agree with Katowner. Better to get a GS exhaust as you know it will be running correctly when you fit it.

Before you fit it, give it a good rub down with sandpaper (or get it sandbalsted), then paint it with 1200F paint. Looks great when you install it.

There was a thread recently of someone slotting on an exhaust made for an R6 onto a GS500.

The search button is your friend.
