ay up folks was wondering if anyone could help me.

As some of you may no i am now the owner of a 2003 honda cbr600rr, and i absolutley love it to bits,
However i have recently discovered a problem with it..

The past couple times ive been out and given it some hard loving, sometimes when the revs get above 14k (hits the redline at 15k) the engine just cuts out completely, and then because im rolling it bumps back into life. Has anyone got any ideas as to what could cause this, its just as if i have hit the killswitch by mistake but havent lol.
Anyone experienced this before? The engine runs sweetly on all four cylinders, which kinda edges me towards an electrical fault..?

Thanks in advance Thumbs Up Mr. Green

Possibly the most retarded-looking question ever, but you aren't simply hitting the rev-limiter are you?

Does the rev counter drop to zero when it cuts out? If so, it is definately electrical. If it doesn't, it still might be electrical.

As Mister James said, sure it's not the rev limiter kicking in (which is your bikes way of telling you to change up a gear)?

Hi

As above, as often the rev counter lags behind when the revs are increasing rapidly.

Can be fun to try and brake hard and then accelerate again before the rev counter has finished falling back.

All the best

Nope its definatley not the limiter, i have hit the limiter before and it gives the same sorta sensation when riding but the engine is definatley cutting out. When riding at about 14K there used to be a little orange rev light flashing at me to change, but i dont seem to get this anymore. I have also tried revving it when stood in neutral and it has cut out. And yes the tacho drops down to 0, exactly as it would if i had hit the kill switch.

Thanks alot.

Possibly crap in the fuel tank? I'm not sure if this would cause the tacho needle to drop to 0 though.

my brothers bike does this too, but it's a suzuki.. think it might be something mechanical, cos his bike has the bare minimum electrics but if you ride it to the redline in any gear, it will cut out Til you back off a bit, or change up. Thumbs Up sorry I can't give a diagnosis. Embarassed

i would tend to say its something to do with the fuel too, my old 400 when i bought it was doing something similar coz i had furred up fuel lines...under hard acceleration it would stutter a loose power obviously no fuel getting in.
if it aint that then electrical prob maybe
also i take it its injection??? might wanna clean that bit out too while your at it

Hi

Don't know how the limiter works on that bike.

Conventionally it will kill the ignition, but it might be killing the fuel pump instead. However I would expect that to be way too slow to be of any use.

Fuel related things normally come in gradually and disappear gradually.

All the best

Keith

As suggested, it sounds fuelling related to me. Take off the carb and fuel lines and give them both a good clean. Then stick a new fuel filter in and try again.

thought as much, dunno how tricky the injection is to get to might have some crap in that, think you can buy some special fluid for it might be worth a clean out

Thanks for the suggestions folks, Surely a fuel related problem would cause the engine to run a bit rough, but mine runs sweet as a nut which makes me think electrical. Thanks alot Thumbs Up Mr. Green

Not always.

When I first got my bike it had been stood for a fair while. I'd be out riding it, running perfect, then all of a sudden it'd be like someone hit the killswitch. It'd be pot luck whether it'd fire up straight away afterwards: sometimes it fired back up, sometimes you'd be trying to start it for 5 minutes at the roadside. Anyway, after filling up the tank a few times the problem disappeared completely.

The problem? Mongy fuel.
