Just joined up today so thought I'd introduce myself.
I'm Iain, 36, from Glasgow.
Having always wanted a bike but being scared of the damage I could do on one I have eventually made the move to 2 wheels. I had planned go straight down the direct access route and buy a beast but after some thought decided that once I passed got my CBT I would serve my apprenticeship on a 125.
Got my CBT and theory out the way about a month ago and bought a nice Yamaha YBR. Only done about 150 miles on it but starting to get more confident and enjoy it every time i'm out. Now just need to keep putting the miles in, get some lessons and I'm sure soon enough I'll be on the bike I want.
Problem is that the bike I want changes quite often but that's something I will deal with later.

Get plenty of miles in whilst the weather stays good Very Happy I rode my 125 for a full season before I took my lessons/test and you'll be surprised by the fact that bigger bikes are even easier to ride than the small ones. In the meantime, just enjoy the YBR.

I've never understood how anyone can make that decision before doing their CBT.
It's like people that sign up for their CBT through to full DAS and pay money before they've even ridden a bike.
Bikes aren't for everyone but equally 125s aren't for everyone (I hate pretty much any bike below 250) and any bike only goes as fast as you make it go.

Hi Iain, nice to have you onboard. Nothing wrong with going down the 125 route, I had a laugh on one for a year or so. Just make sure that you don't ride anything bigger until you're ready to do your training and tests.

Are you pleasure riding, or commuting as well?

Except when you grab a fist full of throttle on a big bike you end up going a lot quicker Smile I liked my 125 but they're too slow, good to learn on though. Enjoy the YBR and I agree, get out on it as much as you can, Scottish winters begin in September and end in May right? Razz

My plan eventually is to do a bit of both. I won't be tied into commuting everyday as I will have the car for that, especially in the winter, but the problem is for me at the moment I can't commute unless I want to add an extra 30 - 45 mins to my journey due to not being able to use the motorway on L plates. Most of my riding will be for the fun of it. I think my 125 is great for learning on and once I pass my test will still serve me as economical commuter/runabout plus my wife quite fancies doing her CBT so she'll get the use out of it too. I will probably have it for some time even once I have a big bike.

Haha, only if we're having a good year.

If you grab the throttle then you've made it go that fast, no one else.

Welcome Iain! Following in your footsteps, although a good 10 years on you. CBT and theory done. Brand new (MT) 125 in the driveway and the plan is to develop my skills on that and move on in a year's time. No rush to get a "big" bike, this is plenty for me to play with.
