Anyone fancy it?

Quote:
Hello
Bike is looking for regional correspondents to help broaden the magazine's coverage. The ideal candidates go to most of the local bike events, take half-decent photographs and can write an accurate caption. In exchange for supplying a monthly batch of photos and captions you'll receive a free subscription, an exclusive T-shirt and, of course, worldwide fame and recognition. If you think you can help us out, please email [email protected] (subject line- regional correspondent) with three of your best local bike meet pics. Thanks!

Also, the Bike team will be at the Star and Garter, Chelveston, nr. Higham Ferrers, Northamptonshire this Wednesday evening (9th) - if you can make it, we will be pleased to see you there.

It would mean going to bike meets so that's me out. Wink

FFS. Rolling Eyes

It would also mean working for way less than the equivalent of minimum wage.

Way to go Bike, let's exploit the readership and avoid paying proper NUJ rates huh?

Which is a t-shirt and a subscription more that the other people that travel to lots of bike meets get Smile.

'Tis a little cheeky I'd agree, but <shrugs>, that's the way the world works.

I don't think there's any arm twisting going on, it's one of those things you either want to do, or don't. Rolling Eyes

Unless the people doing it were members of the NUJ, they can pay them what the hell they like.

And its only taking photo's and doing captions for them at bike meets, hardly what I'd call 'journalism'. Rolling Eyes

I see your point, but try the same argument on the journalist that they are no longer paying because they got someone to do it for free. It all sounds fair, until photographers etc have to find better paid work elsewhere and general standard of Bike's journalism goes down the toilet.

Went down the toilet years ago Wink.

I suspect a lot of such media may well go that way - with the internet everyman has a free voice, which rather de-values those that are paid for the same thing.

A lot of 'magazine' style sites are written entirely by unpaid writers to go with the 'free' nature of their distribution.

I suppose it's a bit extra for the cv if someone is interested in a media carreer.

Can't see any other suckers falling for it.

a) i dont go to bike meets
b) dont think a camera phone would be up to the job

its only a snap and a caption Rolling Eyes aint gonna kill anyone is it

its for people that go to the bike meets anyway, and also all they are asking is for a few pics and caption, plenty of people will post stuff like that up on the net anyway so may as well get it in print, and might work with the ladies saying that your a freelance writer!

But the thing is G (And Silver) the majority, if not all, of the people out there doing it for free want to actually make a living out of it, so are doing it for free to get noticed and hopefully move up the ladder to being paid for what they want to do and say.

I know I've done plenty of stuff for free when climbing up the journolistic ladder... Shifty Neutral

They may find a handful of really talented writers out of it. But just writing captions will make life a bit tricky, but then, a good writer will shine for being able to get across the bike meet with only a handful of pictures and a few lines of copy to go with it. Wink

I usually find bcf more interesting than most of the bike bags, and no one writing on here gets paid to do it.

Ah yes, but what happens when these people who have been doing it for free turn around and ask for money:

"Why should we pay you now, when your work was free last week? Besides there's another bloke over there willing to do it for nothing."

Vicious circle.
