At least two Israeli fighter pilots have deliberately missed civilian targets in Lebanon as disquiet grows in the military about flawed intelligence, The Observer has learnt. Sources say the pilots were worried that targets had been wrongly identified as Hizbollah facilities.

Not too sure easy it is to miss a target these days. Each mission goes out with a target pack, smart bombs are Laser guided by data entry using GPS co-ordinates. The F16 is just a means of ferrying the ordanance from A to B.
Unless the IDF are using 'dumb' iron bombs which are lobbed from the plane by various means, obviousley colateral damge using these would be catastrophic. Unlike the yids don't you think!

Smart bombs are expensive. Only something like 10% of the bombs dropped during the first gulf war were smart bombs, despite the media coverage at the time suggesting otherwise.

All the best

What's classed as a miss?

Back in WW2, didn't they class a couple of hundred metres as close enough? Whilst now if you miss by 6 inches you'd class it as miles off?

What the RAF (and media) class as a miss and what the rest of us should class as a miss will be different things.

A miss is not hitting the target, plain and simple.

Technology has moved on somewhat in 15 years, GW2 saw nearly all airstrikes using smart bombs.
Dumb bombs are now used for carpet bombing as used in Afghanistan with the B52s' from very high altitude.

The target for the missile could be a small dot from a targetting device. Or a very accurate GPS coordinate or something like that. If it misses that spot by two inches, would that be a miss?

We might accept that hitting the power station is a hit, but the RAF might class it as a miss if the missile doesn't go through the front door and blow up when it hits the receptionist in the left eye. All depends on your standards.

So if the media goes of what it's told be the RAF, and tries to turn it into a story for the rest of us, they can easily make it sound like there's missiles flying way off target everywhere.

Rick.

well its nice to hear some israelis have a conscience.

I dont think I could ever work for the armed forces as I might be reluctant to be involved with firing on civilians when any militairy gain was suspect.

However, the pilots are paid to do a job and they shdnt really assume they know better than intelligence as Im sure Hezbollah live in houses similar to the rest of the population with their families.
