Each day on my small commute to work I use mainly 30mph zones and 'local'/smallish roundabouts. It seems that people are becoming more and more likely to just fly onto the roundabout, vaguely checking to see if anything is coming but not relly looking. Essentially, everyone is on the autopilot drive to work, but the speeds seem to be increasing.

I very nearly got t-boned this morning, twice; and it seems to be happening more and more lately.

Is this happening to anyone else or is it just the locals in my area?

I like our roundabout system and I'm wary of traffic calming measures, but I get the feeling it's only a matter of time until my luck runs out. Perhaps a different system would be better?

I went out riding with my girlfriend yesterday for the first time. At one junction she was in the lead, as she passed it a van started to pull out right in front of me - queue a lot of horn blowing and brakes followed by some frantic arm waving. At least he got the message as he didn't come within about 600 yards of me as we rode down the road.

This does lead to the question of what do you do when something like this happens? Obviously horn blowing is obvious but do you do anything else. I tend to wave my arm (nothing rude) a bit just to make sure they get the point that they have almost tried to kill me.

On the roundabout front I know exactly what you mean. My pet hate are these cars that want to ride pillion with you - they almost touch your back wheel. As soon as they do this, I ease further back from the trafic ahead to give me some room to stop and then they seem to get even more pissed off. And all this is normally in 30 or 40 limits! Alternatively your doing 40 in a 40 and they are up your arse, move over and wave them past, they then overtake and proceed to drive at 35!!!

They're all jealous stuck in their tin cans!

Cheers

Dave

I tend to do the head shake and mentally thank the laws of probability!

It does seem that some feel they need to chase up any empty space in front of them. I also often find cars, expecting me to be speeding as I'm on a bike, driving right in the gutter so I can get past. Although this is quite a nice gesture it can be annoying in a 30mph zone where I'm actually quite happy sitting behind them.

I used to do this and then figured that if they can't see a big motorbike with its headlights on then they have little chance of noticing a head shake! Anyway they are probably too busy congratulating themselves on what a good job they did avoiding that crazy motorcyclist to notice anything!

Am I sounding bitter and twisted - maybe it's just in the last two weeks I have started riding around Cardiff and realised how crazy the drivers are around here!

Cheers

i simply give the ffs not again kind of arm gesture. It's also annoying when they drive in the gutter in country lanes so you get shot blasted by gravel and whatnot and they usually do it with an upcoming blind corner.

I've recently returned from a 2000 mile trip round France, in the whole 2 weeks or so that i was there, i had one person cut me up in a dangerous fashion. Motorists were polite, courteous and observant and the majority of them drove at a decent pace, no-one sat in the outside lane of a dual carriageway unless they were overtaking something, the list goes on.....

Despite returning to England in the very early hours of the morning (i got home at 5.30am Sunday), i only managed a meagre 50 miles on English roads before some myopic twat had a fair go at crashing into me.

What a lovely end to a great holiday.

every other day some idiot will pull straight across without looking in front of me as i have set off across the small roundabout near me.

i blast my horn at them, give them the wanker sign and call them all the names under the sun.

i try not to get road rage when that happens but as you know it's hard not too.

this car driver behaviour is offset though by the other 99% of car drivers who are courteous to me all the time.

so i'll not tar them all with the same brush Thumbs Up .

Just the other day when I popped home for lunch from work I had a close encounter with some blind twerp on our roundabout. There are 3 lanes onto this particular access point, the right for going right around or the third exit, the middle for going off on the second exit and straight on then the third is to go off on the first exit down our dual carriageway, everyone knows how it works here. So there I am up at the front on the middle lane and this guy in this car totally oblivious to me in the left lane only comes round next to me, he has made up his own lane and is right next to me, so close that I could touch him! Believe me, if I had not tooted at him and waved him a gesture he would of ran me off my bike! What a bloody idiot!

Yup roundabout roulette sums it up.

Me too, every day it happens.

You've just got to expect it and go slower than you would want to.

---------

I had words with some old women, who pulled out on me last week, I caught her up, she had her window down. She wouldn't even give me eye contact, just stared straight ahead.

Yesterday, 1 lane goes in to 2 lanes, I signal and move over. Then dxxk head in volvo at last minute moves over without signal looking etc. I beeped the horn, he put his hands up in a gesture. Anway at the point i'm at the traffic lights and back foot the bike to meet with the car. I told him he should look out for bikes as I do in the car, he told me he does, I clearly pointed out that he was wrong.

Had another d**k head that pulls out of his drive doing a right turn, without even looking. I stopped and had a word and he claims it was my fault!!! He had a young kid in the car, if he hadn't
he'd have been decked. My mate says we should go round and have words, but i'd just get done.

A few months ago I had some twat in a chavved up rover25 overtake me whilst I was going round a mini roundabout (he basically went the wrong way round an island and carried on past me on the wrong side of the road)
'L' plates can be dangerous to your health get off em ASAP (to those it applys to)

I got picked up to go to the pub on monday (GOOD GIRL!!!) and I actually ended up screaming in the car I was so scared. Central London - she didn't even brake to cross a junction, she just went piling over. There were cars parked either side so visability was very low, and I just sat there shouting and screaming at her. AND she was smoking while driving - the car was going haywire. Scary to think they let people like her on the roads, she just passed her test! That drive definately has made me 100% more traffic conscious...
