If its from the top of the Empire State Building then yes.
I dropped the Caberg once, it slipped from the seat on the floor. I broke a flimsy plastic air filter on the top and thats it. I am not spending another £100 on a new lid just because of that.
The safety nazis say yes to a new lid after each drop, but theres a drop and theres a drop. ____________________ Current : MSX 125 Past : CBR 900RR Monkeybike : c50 LAC : ZXR750 H2 : FZR600 : ZX7R P3 : YW100 : TRX850: Trophy 900 T309 : GSXR 600 L0: Monkeybike : XJ6S Whosthedaddy |

from a safety point of view, Yes
scientific reason is when you drop your lid the softer layer of impact foam compresses increasing its density. so when you are involved in a genuine accident the foam is already compressed thus removing less impact energy than if it was still in its origional state. so theoretically speaking your lid should be reaplaced every time it kisses the floor, however it is unfeasable.
also, aparently plastic helmets (detectable by the seam around the helmet) has a life of two years and fiberglass helmets last four years. ____________________ A scientist crossed a skunk with an owl. He's got a bird that smells but doesn't give a hoot |

My Ex's brother asked me to go helmet shopping with him, found a nice shoei raid II think it was. Anyway took it to the shop assitant to ask if they had a new one out back rather than the one on display. On handing it over "they" dropped it. Personally I think it was the shop assitants fault, but he immediately tutted and made John pay for it......!! ____________________ current bike: GSX-R 750 K6 stolen, found the next day in a van in Durham, returned to me 3 months later costing me my NCB and my excess...

Dropping a lid is fine.
Your head isn't it in.
So there's not a force inside to actually compress the impact layer.

totally agree.. there's not enough oomph in an empty lid to cause any deformation of the shell..
assuming it's not been dropped from a great height..
off a bike, or from hand at the side of your body, it shoud be fine
they don't so much 'go off' but UV light can attack fibres, breaking them down, as can grease and oils from your hair, gloves (if you use your lid as a handbag) and other stuff that gets in contact with your helmet. It those things that can, over time, deteriorate the lid.
most places recommend changing a lid every 5 years.
if your lid doesn't see the light of day, and is only used a couple of times a year, it'll last longer.

Reminds me, next time one of you guys has an old helmet just try and destroy it
we had an old AGV one that was dead so tried to damage it, threw it on the ground, jumped on it and chucked boulders on it and the shell never gave in
then ripped the polystyrine out and that took ages to damage and never fragmented, threw it down, jumped on it, even hit it with a hammer that left an indentation. the only way we could kill it was by dropping a ball hammer on it, then the polystyrene gave in.
as for the shell, it is still in one piece! we couldn't damage it, only managed a huge crack, we even set fire to it and that did very little! lol got pics of the remains somewhere, will post at some point lol ____________________ A scientist crossed a skunk with an owl. The gadget that you stick to your helmet which claims to tell you when it needs replacing is called a Shok-SpotR helmet sensor, £20, available from www.motohaus.com and this is what RIDE magazine wrote about it in the Aug 2006 issue:
"Knocking your new lid on the floor is not only annoying, it can also damage your helmet, although it can be difficult to tell. Which is where this sensor helps out.
The Shok-SpotR uses sensor detection technology developed for laptop computers to log the deceleration rate of your helmet during an impact. The point at which the sensor activates has been set by the manufacturer and is based on a series of tests inspired by various worldwide helmet safety standards.
The sensor attaches to the back of your helmet and turns red if the impact is considered dangerously severe. "
And no, it wasn't in the April 1st issue! ____________________ Keep it shiny! |
