Went to my local (ish) yam garage yestoday to look for a new 1l bike!

They had a 1996 Thunderace with DT/alrm etc on it for £2299 the bike has 17k on the clock.

As soon as my licence comes back He said I could go have a test ride if I take my gear down!

Is this a good price?

I'd say it's far too overpriced considering I watched this auction end at:

i reckon private sales are usually a better bet than dealers who have overheads to pay for before they can make a profit on a bike

Mines a 1997 (R) in blue & black.
It was on 13000 miles when I got it in May.
It's now on 21000 miles and I think it's a cracking bit a kit.
The only problem I've had in this time is a snapped speedo cable.

Good for 170mph, handles like something half it's weight, really comfy for long distance, pulls like a train....
Granted it eats tyres and drinks oil, but then again it's supposed to do that!

You get a lot performance for you're money with a Thunderace; and even though £2299 seems a fraction over the odd's, it'll still be worth it if it's anything like mine.

Bear in mind that blue & black thunderace's are the fastest. Thumbs Up Razz Laughing

Heres mine, like all thunderace,s it only burns lots of oil if you thrash the nuts off it (ie 130mph+) when l toured scotland on it l only got through 2 liters of oil and thats in 2,000 miles.

*sigh* Not all Thunderaces burn oil. I had a 98 'R' Ace (bought it in 02) that had 4k on the clock, I put very little oil in in between services. I had the bike up until last August and sold it for £1750, top condtion and with 23 k on the clock. I loved it, very fats and although a bit lardy, would see off every modern 600 withoit a problem. faster than an RSVR in a straight line as well by a significant amount. There are some very nice low mileage Aces out there if you look.

The common greeting among most thunderace owners is "ooh a thunderace, does it use much oil"

The cause of the oil burning is know to be faulty stem valve seals which allow oil to pass through caused by the increased oil pressure pass 6,000 revs and a slight oval bore which can be sorted by a 1040cc rebore and piston kit.

Those who state they ace uses no oil or very very little either own 2000+ models/don,t take the bike pass 6k offen/ or have the luck of having one of the few aces that does,nt have the problem.

if you look on any thunderace forum of site its a expect fact they burn oil. https://www.exup1000.co.uk/phpBB2/

Yep, it is a common fault, but as you know, we had the discussion when we met up, it wasn't a problem with mine. And you know I took it over 6k Wink

I carry around a small washing up liquid bottle full of oil - I would do with any bike, not just the ace (and a tool kit under the seat, plus some crocodile clips for the optimate connector in case anyone I'm with needs a jump start).

Only had the oil light come on once - that was after about 1500 miles of ownership, and no drama. Light came on, I pulled over, put oil in up to level, rode off. That's it.

If you look at a thunderace make sure the exup valve is working - on the gear lever side you'll see at the bottom tucked behind the fairing a silver cover. With the engine off pull the top cable gently - it should make the servo motor whir under the petrol tank. When the bike is turned on (engone not need to be started) you should hear the/see the cable move. If it don't then check the tacho - if the needle flicks to 7k rpm the cable either needs adjusting (too tight) or servo motor is knackered (get one off ebay) and adjust price of bike accordingly.

With the valve not working right, performance below 7k rpm is leisurely at best, and docile. When it hits 7k hang on for dear life cos it will feel like a rocket and a bit unsettling with an 'all or nothing' effect.

When the valve is working (as mine is now as of last week) the engine is very torquey - you can waft along in top gear and tickle the throttle to see the speedo charge upwards, very relaxed if you want it to be (not need to drop gears to get going) and manic if need be, so be aware there's around 125hp at the back wheel!

check out the forum as mentioned a couple of threads above - friendly and knowledgeable (far more than me - I'm a noob) and will point u in right direction.

There was an 11000 mile for £1800 on ebay this week - dunno if still there. They are a very fast bike for very little cash!!! Great brakes, stable at speed, get a double bubble and will happily tour all day (though you may, like me, want to get the seat recovered with more padding!).

Good luck!

Ah, there we go

https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/yamaha-thunderace-yzf-1000-only-11000-miles_W0QQitemZ120018544007QQihZ002QQcategoryZ10490QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Not long left on it now - it has a seat cowl (£120 new) and can (though I gather the standard can is pretty effective and aftermarket stuff generally only makes them noisier).

I paid more for a higher mileage older bike with a knackered exup valve Sad If only... Ah, hindsight is a wonderful thing...

Just noticed the Tunderace and 'Yamaha' logos on the black bodywork panel look a bit like Richard Hammond's Teeth.

Additionally, the Yamaha logo isn't supposed to be there. It's either very clean, just the way the photo's come out, or some dodgy photoshopping to hide where it's been dropped. Probably perfectly innocent, but I'd want to see some Hi-res images before placing a bid.

Standard Decals...

Well spotted - might have had a low speed/no speed drop, but for that sort of money I'd have been happy to buy and look out on ebay for replacement plastics if needed, if the bike ran as well as he said...
