Do they really burn through that much oil? All of them or just some?

I rarely topped up the oil between services. But as stated in the thread, some do burn oil.

Hi

Quick look at the Ebay one and I suspect that they are reflective stickers and they have photographed it with a flash in the camera.

As to burning oil, seems to often be a Yamaha feature. The original FZ750 did not burn oil, but the later ones (and all the later bikes using developments of that engine) seem to have a bit of an oil burning reputation. With the FZ it seemed to come along when they went to slipper pistons.

All the best

Keith

How do they stand up to winter road conditions?

The fairing screws turn to chocolate at the bottom with the belly pan/lower fairing (don't they all?) and the exup valve needs a strip/clean/paint up I would recommend when you get it to avoid any bother (mine was crudded up and not working properly. Now it is and it completely transforms the bike - you can tickle the throttle and short shift and still get banned for speeding!). Other than that carry a small bottle of oil with ya and like, 1 in 10 journeys of reasonable distance you might need to use it, so around 1000 miles, or you might not.

Later ones didn't have the problem I believe, and if you get it bored out to 1040 cc it solves the problem completely I think (and um, gives a useful 150 or so hp at the back wheel Smile ) more info on the https://www.exup1000.co.uk/ forum.

I looked into getting a 1040/1070cc kit, pistons and rings were £300 and l could the cyclinder block bored out/honed for £100 plus a gasket set at £100

So by doing the work your self and not changing the stem seals or having any other head work done it comes too £500 which is,nt too bad Thinking

As with all things, depend how you ride it. With a knackered exup valve I was getting 40-45mpg.

So far done over 100 miles on bike since Exup knackered, hopefully light won't come on till 150 miles, but maybe that's me being a bit optimistic, hoping for 200 miles outta the tank Smile

Or maybe I am not riding it fast enough Smile

I paid £1800 for a 99 model last year. That price does seem high to me but then that's what you get if you buy from a dealership.

My thunderace will be up for sale shortly.

1999 model.

sorted suspension, PMF cast iron fully floating disks, braided hoses, Stealth Tri-metal sprocket (new + chain), airblade DB screen, oe screen, remus Ti can, and OE can, single seat conversion and pillion seat, Renntec grabrail (supplied not fitted) belly pan has some holes, but have a spare one in better nick that just needs sprayed. Spare engine. Exup was unseized and lubed about 300 miles ago. High mileage, 52k, but the engine's only done about 20odd, as it was swaped out.

the fork seals are gone, so I'll be doing them shortly before MOTing and Taxing is, and then advertising it.

I'd be looking for £2000 for it, although if anyone can be arsed to do the seals themselves, I'd let it go for £1700 as is.

Compared to the state of some bikes I've seen advertised, my bike is tidy, despite a difference of opinion on servicing.

I've seen bikes with seized suspension linkages, badly worn tyres due to incorrect pressures, knackered brakes, and blown fork seals: all where the owner was happy to ride it and wasn't even aware anything was wrong..

If anyone can find anything wrong with my bike then they don't have to buy it.

It's just done a trackday, and was running sweet as a nut.

It has just been serviced, tho, which included (as well as the EXUP work) oil/filters change, plugs, valve clearances, carb balancing (didn't need it as it turns out), and in the last year it's had new wheel bearings and new chain and sprockets.

as I said.. I'll get round to doing the forkseals before MOTing and taxing it for sale, but other than that.. it's a peach, albeit a slightly cosmetically challenged one.

What did valve clearance check cost, and if they need adjusting, what's the further cost involved parts/labour wise, anyone know? Mine's at just short of 22k so doesn't need doing right now, but I want to know how much to save up :S

no idea how much it costs... I do all my own servicing and work,

alhough a local bike shop charges £300 for a full service which, I think, includes valves. Make what you will of that.

Not cheap because there is a fair amount of labour involved if any need changing. Once stuff is out of the way (radiator, etc) checking them isn't difficult. Changing them means taking the cams out and finding what size shims are already there, then hoping that they have correct ones in to adjust them (rather than having to wait a day or so while the order comes through).

All the best

Just seen another on ebay if thread starter is still looking:

https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/YAMAHA-THUNDERACE-1996-1000c-c_W0QQitemZ300019758307QQihZ020QQcategoryZ9809QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I don't know why exactly, but I like the look of this bike. Maybe cause there are no stickers on it, but that's ominous in itself - prolly been down the road at some point, and no mention of mileage. That's a race fairing been converted I think - fair bit of work and from the photos looks like a decent job has been done...

im not an expert so dont quote me on this but for a 1000cc bike with 17k on its clocks thats 10 years old the price doesnt seam that bad if its in good condition i should suspect it would be a decent buy, after all i payed £1200 for my 98 cb500 with 19k on the clocks and it wasnt is as good condition when i bought it as it is now. at the end of the day if u like the look of the bike and after uve test rode it you like how it handles why not spend abit of your hard earned on a new toy.
