As of last week, my cat's decided his litter tray is no longer worthy of his shite and has started shitting all over the floor in the conservatory; the rug and the door mat being top choice atm.

Anyone know why this has happened and how to stop it?

Any advice greatly appreciated. Thumbs Up

Usually cats piss on ares when there is something wrong withthem, this is how they let you know orthey feel insecure in their homes so they scent the area. One of my cats likes the clean fresh towels after the tumble dryer on teh side board.

Not sure why the shite, my cat shite in the bath once but i assumed it was because the door to the room where the litter was was closed.

Cheers dragonfly. Fortunately, he's pissing in the tray. It's just his arse causing trouble. Previous cats have only shat in bad places because they didn't have access to the tray. Not had this problem before. Neutral

Grab the cat by its neck and shove its face in the shit while shouting abuse at it, worked like a treat on our cats and they never shited in the house again.

(not for kittens though as they don,t know better)

Had a couple of experiences with cats doing this. Tends to be an attention/insecurity thing. Don't reinforce the pattern by fussing it if you find the cat in the act as it were, but go out of your way to establish a set feeding routine and get into the habit of taking time to fuss it as you or it pass each other. Takes a week or two to kick in, but that's worked for me (and a fair few others, so I hear anecdotally) in the past.

Also, check the fur on the hindquarters. Some cats develop allergies to specific types of litter, it tends to show as a slight reddening of the skin or the fur thinning in more extreme cases.

this makes them worse, may work on dogs but not cats, apparently they dont know they have done anything wrong and stress will make it worse for them. I read that you could get some sort of plug in from the vets which made the cat more secure the scent, like a calming thing.

This is what i was trying to get across lol (from craigie b link) Def worth a look momentmori.

Medical. When your cat starts acting weird, you should first make sure that the cause is not medical-related. Urinary infections can cause random peeing, while rabies-although unlikely due to mandatory vaccinations-can cause aggression. The last thing you want to do is reprimand your cat when the behavior isn't her fault.

Good link craigie b!

Cats usually change their shiting habits if their routines are upset. Has something happened in the house recently to people or animals, new addition, someone leaving, that kind of thing?

Best thing to do is get some more litter trays. put them where the cat is shitting then gradually move them back to where you want them to be.

Hi
The first thing i would do is to get your cat checked out by the vet to make sure its not its not a medical problem. Also your vet should be able to give u some advice on how to solve the problem.

If its not medical then it could be due to several reasons.

have u changed the cats brand of litter that u buy? if you have done that then cats can be sensitive to change.

cats can also be very sensitive to other changes, a new pet, moving furniture and stuff around etc can upset them and cause them to go to the toilet elsewhere.

Get some toilet roll tubes and put them on the cats legs, finding some safe way to secure them.

It won't help the shitting, but it'll make them walk real funny, Robot style, so you'll be too busy laughing to care!

My partners cat would piss in the tray but shyte in the sink!!!!
In the end, we had to fill the sink n bath up with some cold water!!
Some cats need more privacy, where is the tray? Maybe place it where she craps?!
Or spray some pepper.

I gave this advice once on a forum... and you should have seen the back-lash I got from thousands of cat lovers....!!!

Trying to stop other cats from shitting on your beautiful garden is one problem I have yet to solve. Nowadays it costs me no stress as I have no garden!

In terms of the Smarties tubes on cat's legs, I plead guilty... Laughing Embarassed

Thanks for all your advice. We're currently packing to emmigrate and the house is full of boxes. I did tell him how much it was costing us to send him over and after that... arse contents everywhere.

Thanks craigie b for that website.

I have been trying to reassure the cat. It likes massages. But my dad keeps whacking it round the tail when it does what it's doing which I doubt is helping.

We've also placed other litter trays in the areas it's doing it but it's just finding other places. Don't think this will stop untill we leave in 2 months. Thumbs Down Neutral

Picking up warm festering cat poo with paper towels is unpleasant. I haven't retched this much in my life.

Thanks for all the advice though. It is coming in handy. Thumbs Up
