Greets to eveyone this is my first post and may seem a bit dull but I am due to book my practical test ASAP a question that has arose is when approaching a section of speed bumps not the ones that go right across the rode but the broken type where there is a seperate hump on each side of the rode. Do I actually ride over the hump or do I go around them any advice on this would be great. At the moment I kinda swerve around them Very Happy but for my test I would like to know if this would be allowed. Also any other things to be aware of would be appreciated.

Regards AJ

Go through the middle or near the inside which ever is safer at the time Wink The instructors will be expecting you to do this as going over them is a pain in the ass.

Always try for the centre gap (or if the type where the road widens, go for the left of centre one), as the centre gap is less likely to be full of crap that could puncutre your tyres! Thumbs Up

I have just my test and was on a road that must have 10 of those split speed bumps..... I mainly went through them on the inside, occaissionally I had to go on the outside, cos of parked cars....but I didnt ride over any of the bumps.

If you are going to move across the road (say from the middle of your lane to the crown of the road) to avoid one, check your mirrors and do a quick lifesaver before you manouver.

Depends really. If there are parked cars, go the right side of the hump because he may mark you for being to close to them if you go the left side.

If there is oncoming traffic and parked cars on the left I would go over the hump. He cant fail you for going over it.

Basically, if there is no danger he will expect you to ride around them. This is what I did on my test and the examiner followed my paths too (thank fook) Wink

You've got it wrong, they're not speed bumps, they're wheelie launch points! Razz

The little uns are no good for that, G. The wide steep and low ones seem to work better. Hit it at about 35 and the bandit lifts about 3 feet for about 6 feet of travel.

Providing they've got decent width, they're fine.

Got some really nasty ones near my work (full width) that I go over 4 times a day - the edges are really 'sharp' so can't go over at speed on a sports bike - but fine to launch on the trailing edge.

On my lessons my instructor told me to "aim for the middle" of the speed bumps. I aimed squarely at the centre of a bump, and bumped over it.

"No, aim for the middle" he repeated.... I thought "god, he's picky, I must have been just off..." and tried to line right up with the white arrow as I bumped over the second set.

Finally he realised the confusion and changed it to "Aim between the bumps..."

Yup I'd go with that. My DAS instructor taught us to go to the right of the speed humps (usually putting you towards the central white line), mainly to avoid the build up of gravel and crap near the gutter/left-hand-side. Also because there's better general visibility.
The main exception we found was on one particular narrower road, on a right hand bend, you'd need to stay to the left of lane to allow for unseen oncoming traffic.
The other guy on DAS with me had quite a seat pinching moment in exactly this situation... but luckily for me I was riding tail end charlie behind the instructor at the time, so followed him to the left

Would agree with "road cushions" (as I think the small ones are called) but not so with full width speed humps. Just cos the limit is 30 does not mean you have to travel at 30 - only if safe to do so. We have some savage full width ones round here that, if you took them at 30, you would be in the next county on landing. Methinks the examiner would fail you if you took ones like that at 30.

Yea, the actual idea of them putting speed bumps in is to slow you down. Therefore we can presume that it would be considered reasonable to travel below the speed limit.

They're nae good on a supermoto. You used to have to hit them at over 60 on my MZ to even get the front wheel to leave the road. Even those great big 'table top' ones that you have both wheels on at once.

I was itensely disappointed and at the same time mightily impressed by the suspension when I hit one of those nippy rubber ones at about 50mph and the bike just went 'dunt, dunt.'

Your instructor will show you exactly how to ride the bumps lol , but the general idea is not to ride over them , but to go between them always taking the safest option , remembering mirror , mirror , life saver manouver

Speed bumps are the curse of the devil himself, bikes are quite fornuate that they can go between them, but watch the knackers on the full bumps as bouncing over them will induce some sore gonads after a while Embarassed

Knackered Gonads + Avatar = Priceless! Laughing

Plus, I think one set of full bumps will hurt the gonads, if you dont take them right. Slightly lift your arse off the seat, and you will land on the seat further back, towards the pillion seat.
