I bought a Honda NSR at the weekend but stupidly didnt do a HPI before I got it, I waited until I got home Rolling Eyes

Turns out its a cat-c write off and it hasnt had a VIC test, thing is, the accident happened in 1999 and since then theres been at least 2 different owners - it said on the logbook, current owner got it in 2004, previous owner got it in 2002 or something, but I thought you didnt get a logbook if it was a write off? (at least with a car you get a letter saying you cant have a log book until you get a VIC test)

The bike seems straight and the frame numbers match the logbook but I havent riden it yet because its a non runner (got a piston kit ordered)

Do you still need a VIC test on a bike, or is that just for cars? All the repair work has been done, I found the bent handle bars and forks in a box of bits that came with it, thats why I did the HPI

Thanks
Rob

my bandit was a Cat C and no test thing with it as far as i'm aware. I'd get in contact with the seller though and get some money back as it will always be a cat c even when you sell it.

It was advertised as spares or repair with bits missing and a non runner, only paid £150 for it!

Does it say anything on the logbook about it being a write off? Again, with cars that have been written off and repaired it has something on the logbook saying that it was a write off but repaired, the logbook for this bike didn't have anything like that on it that I noticed, I'll have to wait until my copy arives!

Thanks
Rob

"Category C - Repairable salvage. Usually applies to vehicles with significant (structural) damage, where cost of repairs exceeds book value. Can be sold complete to Trade or Public. Recorded as "Category C" at DVLA. Category C vehicles' V5 documents are returned to DVLA. You re-apply, to DVLA or at your local VRO, for registration on the original identity once you have fixed it up, MOTed it and want to Tax it. Re-registration removes the Category C classification, but evidence it was at one time Category C remains on the vehicle's record at DVLA (and HPI and AA and the others)."

Cat C is no problem really. I was knocked off last year and my bike got written off as a Cat C, contacted my insurance company and they said there was no need to get a test or anything done and that the bike was still fine to be ridden etc. and I was still fully covered by my insurance.

Thumbs Up

cat c isnt anything serious
it could affect the value, but the bike will be fine and wont need to be checked over

my 600 is cat c or d, i forget which
mostly just fairing damage

new fairings are very expensive so a bike can be written off purely down to fairing damage, but can be cheaply repaired with second hand fairings or a respray

Hi

The checks on cat C vehicles only came in fairly recently (not sure they apply to bikes yet anyway). Before that you could fairly easily get cat A vehicles back on the road (still seems posssible in some circumstances).

All the best

As far as I can tell mine was written off because of fairings and bent handle bars, I dont have the front fairing but I'm not too bothered just yet

On a £150 bike that looks straight and rides ok, I wouldn't be wasting the money on an HPI.

A cat C write off isn't a big deal, a scrape in a fairing can cat C a bike, well, not quite, but a dinged set of forks easily can. If they've been replaced I'd have no problem owning a cat C bike.

When you come to sell it I wouldn't make a big song and dance about it, I doubt the next person will bother HPI'ing a 10 year old 125 that's gonna be about £500-600.

so in theory we could all go down the breakers, pick up a nice 600 with some fairing damage/bent forks, repair it and get on the road for less than £1500.... hmm i see an idea coming along (see repair-a-ride thread for any more ideas)
cheers

There are quite a few bike slavage companies that sell 'broken' bikes. Have a google and see... e.eg https://www.cheshiremotorcyclesalvage.com/index1.htm

Unfortunately most of them charge well over the odds for the bikes. And by the time you've replaced everything with good 2nd hand parts it comes to at least the cost of an undamaged bike, usually more, and it still has a salvage marker.

Usually the only time it works out cheaper is if you buy a bike directly off your, or a mates insurance company. My insurance company wanted £100 for my cat C ER-5 which needed new forks, painting, and other bits and pieces. I didnt rebuild it as I hadnt the space in the garage but I bought it back, stole loads of bits off it, and then sold the rest to a riding school for £250.

my 04 dt125re is a cat c. Had a few bit of cosmetic damage (panels, tank, lights, handlebars, levers and a slighlty bent rear subframe). To date Ive spent about £250 max on parts and getting it on the road and I paid £950 for the bike.. Still need an end can mind but thats only £50. To buy the same bike (uncrashed of course) would be around the £2k mark. Everything on the my dt was standard.. Its still restricted and had only done 4k miles. Engine is practically imaculate..

Still £1200 couldve bought one of many bigger and better bikes but I wanted a cheap to run and repair road/off-road bike that I can keep after I pass my test Smile
